CPW redemption mistake in my favour!!

I recently claimed my second cashback redemption for £80 from the Carphone Warehouse. I cashed this, and a few days later a second cheque for another £80 arrived in the post. After a slight delay deliberating whether to phone them and ask them about this, I decided not to and cashed the second cheque also!

Today, I got a letter from them apologising for their mistake and saying that the second cheque has been cancelled. What I'm wondering is how can they remove the money from my bank when I've already cashed the cheque?

Has anyone else had this?

To be honest I would have thought that they will be able to stop the cheque - when did you pay it in?

i had this, and like you i thought about cashing it, but i didnt. I guess if you have cashed it will bounce and you may get charged. I would imagine you are entitled to refund for the fee
    ummm...
  • I paid it in on Fri and it cleared on Sat I think. Didn't realise I could get charged if they cancel the cheque. Is that possible?
  • CPWH are perfectly within their rights to cancel the cheque.

  • Have just checked my account and sure enough there is a debit for £80 under the title unpaid cheque. Is it possible that I may be charged for this?

I came back from holiday on Sunday evening to find e2save had sent 2 cashback cheques. I was going to pay both in, until I read the e2save thread on this same subject. I also checked with my bank and they assured me that if I pay in a cheque which gets stopped, I do not get charged by them.

In the meantime, I did not pay in either cheque and e2save assured me I would be getting a letter in 5 working days telling me which cheque could be banked. I am waiting in anticipation.
