Seems more and more threads are being bumped and posted on by newish members. Easy way to get their post count up.
A 2 year old thread isn't going to just be happened upon and the info in the thread will very likely be out of date anyway so no purpose is served by revisiting it.
Perhaps threads that are 6 or 12 months old should be closed if no-one has posted on them for a certain time?

Some various opinions from about 3 months ago when this idea was raised
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2809440"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi aliasojo
We've raised this again today internally and will look at some options.

Why? Things seem fine as they are, IMHO ...0 -
It would depend on the thread and the type of info supplied. Surely this is better looked at by the board guide of the particular board who probs has a little more info than just joe or jill public. A lot of older ideaaaals are still relevant today

Posts are either people who searched google and found old posts and joined to comment.
OR quite commonly spammers search and find old posts and advertise their goods/services.
Spam button works to some degree, I dont see spam posts appear in every forum like previously.

Hi Old Wrinkly
That's the discussion.
Just going to look at the pros and cons and options available and see if making changes would benefit the forum. It's why changes sometimes take longer than expected, as the forum is a broad demographic of people and boards who all want to see different things. We just need to weigh things up.

According to one poster, some info is incorrect/out of date anyway so it's not even as if it could be argued that the thread is still as useful to others?
Clearly certain boards will have threads and info on them which will not date and will still be useful to revisit but I suspect those ones wont be the target of trolls or spanmmers.
Don't most sites close threads over a certain age as a matter of course? The other ones I visit tend to discourage bumping and prefer new threads to be started instead.Herman - MP for all!

In my experience, spamming is fairly random and trolling often occurs on the most frequently-used threads.Clearly certain boards will have threads and info on them which will not date and will still be useful to revisit but I suspect those ones wont be the target of trolls or spammers.
I suppose it depends on the type of sites/forums you frequent. I find a wide difference in attitudes, but very very few that close threads purely on age grounds.Don't most sites close threads over a certain age as a matter of course? I like avforums approach of adding a warning message whenever the user goes to post in an old thread.0

Thats a good idea. I dont use that forum so have not seen it.
A few months back a new member was complaining a special offer was no longer valid and asking why someone had posted it.
The special offer post was over 2 years old.

I do find google a pain when searching forums it seems to like finding ones from 2008.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
