getting a shower put in

My mother has got the builders round to get the bathroom totally changed. The main difference is a change from a bath to a shower cubicle, I have never met or seen the builders to discuss the work to be done, but I told my brother to mention stuff about waterproofing/dampproofing after reading a few threads about tanking but they didnt know how to get it waterproof as they arent plumbers. By the way the reason for the builders rather than plumbers is because my mother wants walls knocked down, new windows put in and a new door to be situated in a current solid wall so it seems more suited for the builders.

Back to the main reason for this thread. The builders want to put up plasterboard and build the shower cubicle on it and then I guess I will be the one tiling over it. Would this be adequate and acceptable for a shower cubicle, tiled plasterboard?

Thanks, James

Personally speaking putting tiles on plasterboard and using them for a shower would be the last choice on my list perhaps not even on the list at all.

Panel products such as Knauf Aquapanel, Marmox and similar are specifically designed for this type of application.

Yes it is adequate, but not the best job.
The vast majority 95%+ are done this way, most builders have never heard of Aqua panels etc or even tanking.
Get your builders to read these threads, and then ask for a quote for the extra work.
  • The aqua panels are quite expensive i think?

About £13 for a small panel. You won't need that many and if you use plasterboard you are only putting off the day you have to do it properly with Aquapanel. It's so much easier to do it right first time.

But not as expensive has having the job done again in a few years time.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • If these builders don't know about waterprooofing, then i suggest you get some who do.I have just done one of these for my niece and got some aquapanel from wickes for the shower area.It was (i think) 12.99 for a 4x3 as opposed to 1.50 for plasterboard.Added about £50 to the job but the cost of putting it right later would be a lot more.

Best way to go, dont forget to buy S/steel or brass screws to fix the boards with.

Is that the Moneysaving version as the genuine ones are ceramic coated and aren't cheap?
