If I'm redundant what benefits will I get

Options
Possibly going to be redundant in the next few months...

Way it'll work is company will continue to pay me until they finish the consultation period (probably end April), then I'd get my notice period paid (luckily, its three months) and also an ex-gratia payment.

At what point, would I be eligible for benefits? After the 3 months notice period (i.e. end aug)? Or does the ex-gratia payment count as well?

What sort of benefits could I expect? I live in house with mortgage, wife works part-time as a nurse and earns approx £15K a year, got son aged 7. At the moment, because my salary is quite high we get the minimum tax credit (£40+ a month).

Also, if I take voluntary redundancy (much better terms) would that affect any benefits as opposed to being made redundant?

The payouts and wifes income will probably scupper all means tested benifits.

    Tax credits no idea.

I think the only thing you will get is contributions JSA claimable from the date of termination.

If you've paid enough NI you'll get contribution based JSA.
  • Date of termination or does the payment in lieu of notice also scupper me for a few months?

How much is JSA these days?

PILON or redundancy doesn't affect contribution based JSA I believe. I think it's £65ish a week now.

    Date of termination,

it changed a long while back it used to be after PILON.

If the reduncacy payments are under £30k you could try to negotiate some of the PILON tax free by working some notice by accepting VR ASAP.

Not all companis will do this.

Gordon thanks. Good to know that. Better than a poke in the eye I guess but not a great deal of dosh.

The government doesnt help you with your mortgage payments these days either does it? It seems your average family (both working, kids, mortgage) are the ones who suffer.

Bit disconcerting of having worked 20 years almost continually the best the government can do is to pay me £65 a week. I guess over that time I've paid my bit in tax (tax/NI is about £1000 a month at the mo - I'm lucky to be paid well).

Although I guess theres plenty of spongers out where who've never worked and have no intention that the government pays for. (Note, I aint having a go at people who cant get a job just those who aint willing).

I think I read somewhere that you can get help with mortgage interest payments.

I'm being made redundant in March, so I'm currently sat here applying for jobs, in between sh1tting myself because I have a mortgage, bills and a baby on the way.

Why are you having a go at anyone?
