Must be just me, but I am confused.

OP bought a four year old car in January, but has the last 5 years MOTs? Then says it failed in Sept 09 which was 3 months before purchase. Surely a four year old car would only have one MOT so far.

I assume we are talking about the same car...:rotfl:

I've re-read my post and what I should have said that you can go onto a government website and look up the last 5 years MOT history. On there it gives details of an MOT in September.

Read my post you impatient kid :D, Jase said MAF was “in effect a valve”, it’s not, it’s a sensor that measures mass air flow.

Or maybe they are one of the (rare?) good dealers who are doing what is necessary to fix the car properly?

OP…..Sounds like you have a burnt exhaust valve seat and the garage have sent it off to have the seat re-cut. They will then reassemble with new or refaced valve and the car should be good as new.

Ideally they would do all the valves whilst it's apart but that might be pushing it a bit for a warranty repair, on the other hand it might be worth a phone call to see if you can talk them into doing them all as compensation for the inconvenience/trouble you’ve had.

Either way the repaired car should be fine and it sounds like you have got a decent dealer.

Thanks so much for that reply. I've had it explained to me by the mechanic and it was way above my head.

I'm in a really quandry though now as to what to do? What do you think may have caused this fault? Was the engine faulty? Could other valves go? I'm really annoyed at the bloke that traded it in as I contacted him and he denied all knowledge. This fault existed on the MOT it had and it failed on emissions. How would they have got the car through the MOT?

The salesman has said he will find me another car but that he will have to put a value on mine! Really, they should not have sold the car to me in that state and they should have repaired it before putting it up for sale. I'm waiting to see what he comes up with but in my mind he should be offering me something near the price they buy them in for an not making a profit out of my misforture. I've endured considerable inconvenience and stressful driving situations with my children in the car. If it's being treated as a part exchange as if I've just walked into a garage as a new customer, I might as well go somewhere else.

16 valves in the head most likely, egr valve, oil pressure valve. Fuel pressure valves, Any of those can fail.
As well as a host of other things.

If the garage are fixing the car then i dont see what other rights you have, Sounds like they are fixing
    it properly.
Also sounds like they are going to value your car and get you to buy another one not a straight swap for another one.

    Worth asking.

Yes, this exactly what the salesman was offering and in my mind it's not acceptable. The trade in price they offer will more than likely be a lot less than what I paid on the 16th January. If I had known it was a serious fault, I would have driven the car back the very first day.

If this is all they are offering, I could go to any garage to trade it in. Why should I give them more business!
