Nokia N73 on 3 Network

A few issues I would like to point out.

I began a brand new 18 month contract with 3 last week having placed an order with them at the end of October via their website. I went through Quidco to get the £100 cash back which has been tracked.

The webpage stated at the time of placing my order that with the N73 on Direct 1400 you get free unlimited Yahoo Go web access. After receiving my phone I discovered by contacting 3 Customer Services that it is not free as you have to purchase an add on download data package but using the Yahoo Go program is free which is installed on the phone. Is it me or was the quote of free unlimited Yahoo Go web access misleading? I thought when purchasing the item that it meant that I could access the web with my phone for free and not have to pay any additional costs. Should I be entitled to free web access? What do you advise?

Now a more annoying issue:

The Bluetooth connection on my Nokia N73 keeps dropping with my Bluetooth GPS device and Navicore 2006 software. My N73 on 3 came with firmware V2...0.0.1 on it and apparently there is a known issue of a Bluetooth problem according to the Nokia forums which has been fixed with the release of firmware V2...0.0.3. 3 CS told me that as it is a 3rd party software on my phone (NAvicore) they are not so interested in my problem as they stated that the software is not supported by 3 as yet as their latest firmware is V2...0.0.1. However, firmware is as far as I am aware similar to the BIOS software in a computer which gets it going and I went to great lengths speaking to 3 CS operator and a manager but to no avail.

Orange have released firmware V2...0.0.3 which according to users on other forums has fixed the Bluetooth problem. I contacted Club Nokia and they provided me with a local Nokia Service Centre phone number. I contacted the NSC and they stated that they have heard of lots of customers experiencing Bluetooth problems with the N73 but Orange are at present the only Network to approve the firmware upgrade. The Nokia Service Centre said that this was the current situation and that 3 need to authorise the release of a Nokia N73 Firmware upgrade to rectify the matter, as and when Nokia have one available.

I contacted Navicore and they gave the following response:

The firmware situation is unfortunately known issue and we hope Nokia
will work on it so that the customers can use N73 & Navicore bundle.
Only Nokia can push these changes all the way to operators.

My point on this matter is that the phone is supposed to have Bluetooth capabilities. Currently these do not work. Therefore I would say that the phone is not fit for its purpose. Should I and other users be entitled to compensation for this as Nokia do not have a product which is doing what it is supposed to do. Is it mainly Nokia's fault or 3's fault too for not publicising this problem on their website? It would appear as though Nokia have released the product without thoroughly testing it.

My received phone from 3 was in a sealed box but the wrist strap and lens cleaner were missing. I just wondered if any others have found this with their N73?

    Hi,

the other day I was on Nokia.co.uk and noticed that you can update the firmware through the website for free, have you tried to do that?
  • Any Nokia service centre should be able to flash the fireware for you for free. Nokia can give you the closest SC if you call them and give them your area.

Bluetooth and phone's are a real pain. Both sides will blame the other. It dosen't help when companys implyment BT in different ways (last time I checked there were 7 different BT profiles and space is limited in a phone).

A phone that makes phone calls is fit for purpose. The fact that it won't connect via BT to something is a compatablity issue.
  • The beginning of this week, when I last looked at the Nokia website they did not have a firmware update for the N73.

As regards to a Nokia Service Centre - I contacted one on Monday and was told that the only firmware upgrade currently available for the phone is for those on the Orange Network. I was told that hopefully Nokia would release an update in about a month for the 3 network. Looking at forums it seems that the bluetooth issue was noted around the end of September.

I think that there is a general bluetooth connectivity problem with the phone as I can remember reading that someone lost the signal between their bluetooth headset and their N73.

Surely though it is a fit for purpose issue too and not just about compatibility. If for instance you bought a TV with built in freeview and you could only watch terrestrial tv on it (channels 1 to 5) even though you were in a strong freeview reception area; then what would be the point of having the TV with built in Freeview which did not let you watch any digital channels? Likewise what is the point of releasing a device that has Bluetooth built in but you cannot properly make use of it?
  • 3 CS contacted me today regarding the Yahoo Go web access which was advertised as free unlimited yahoo go web accesss when I placed my order at the end of October 2006. After a few minutes discussion and a wait for the Customer Services person to make an enquiry, he returned and said that I am entitled to 512MB of data for web access per month for free. Result! The November webpage for the N73 and Direct 1400 contract states: Built in Yahoo! Go with unlimited Yahoo web access - it omits the word free regarding the Yahoo Go so I imagine that the offer has changed and that you may not get the 512MB of data per month for free and so you may have to take out a data add on package.

I have received a £10 reduction on my first bill for not receiving the wrist strap and lens cleaner. Another result!

Now I just need to wait for Nokia to release the Firmware fix for the N73 on 3's Network.
