Doesn't matter how many times a number rings you, the number you see on caller display doesn't have to mean it's a genuine number.

Often I used to send out the CLI 01000000000 because I didn't want the person I was calling to know my number, and the person I was calling wouldn't accept calls from withheld numbers, so I would present a spoofed number.

020 7192 1071 could be a made up number and maybe doesn't really exist.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Interesting - how do you send out a spoof number?

I was using VoIP and entering any number I liked for caller ID, the service I was using has tightened that up now, but there are other ways / providers.

Despite the slightly sinister tone of the word, spoofing is often used by telemarketers to get around customer harassment. They will use a computer to call the customer, using the spoofed number. Regardless of whether the call is answered, the computer will be set to answer all incoming calls with a recorded message, saying the call was from a telemarketer, and apologising for the inconvenience. It also, as said above, gets around the withheld caller block that some customers place on their lines.

Actually, I isagree with the anonymous caller block, as it can also filter out legitimate callers calling from behind a switchboard, for example, government agencies and store customer services. I know if my mum tries to call me from her work, her number is withheld.

BTW, does anyone here who uses that service remember what message callers get? Does it actually say the call was blocked due to the number being withheld, or does it simply just give a disconnect tone?

Also, on a separate note, does anyone agree with me that the Call Barring service is a joke? I say this because, barred callers receive the message "The person you are calling is not accepting calls from you", which immediately advises the person that they have been deliberately barred. So what can they do? They can withhold their number, which would mean the person barring the number would need the anonymous call rejection service as well, which has the drawback mentioned above. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but most people who are barring numbers would rather the person being barred just think that the number either no longer exists, or that there is a fault with their phone, not that they have been deliberately barred, thus giving them the opportunity to find a way around it. Crazy.

Anyway, sorry for going off on that tangent, but hope it answered your question.

    Hussein.

You do get told the the number you have called does not accept your call because it is withheld and to redial without withholding your number.
