Internet access with a laptop whilst on the move

I am looking to buy a laptop soon for my business. I will be around and about the country on a regular basis and will need access to the internet whereever I am. I don't believe I can rely on picking up other people's wifi networks.
What is the best way for me to access the internet? What sorts of speeds are available? What are the costs?
Some people have said a pcmcia broadband card from the mobile providers will work. Others say I can use my Nokia N70 phone as a mobile modem. I have contacted T-Mobile (my current provider) for more info on their web'n'walk services but the leaflets they keep promising still haven't arrived.
Type of usage will be for email downloads and web browsing. No massive downloads will be required.
It needs to be affordable, reliable and relatively quick ......a 512Kb download speed would be sufficient for me for internet access on the move
Has anybody got any ideas or suggestions? Hope someone can help

Or a Vodaphone 3G data card. I get something like 250Mb/month transfer at speeds up 384K for about £30-35 a month. There are higher tariffs too.0
