  • Excellent. Just had mine too and now dreaming of lunch in Le Touquet or Wimereux.

I also bought shares in EuroTunnel to get the shareholder perk of 30% off six crossings per annum (not sure valid with the offers though but will check)

WE had a poor experience with the old sea-cat which folded the year after we had this experience. It used to cross from the old Hover-speed hovercraft terminal at Dover.
Due to rough seas and inclement weather the thing was running very behind and then was suspended. We had been left to sit in queues for over two hours waiting for what we had been told was a late running service. We then got re routed very late at night to the already jammed sardine can ferry.

No more ferries just our flask of coffee and some shortbread biscuits and 35 minutes of pleasant conversation and you are there.

Yes we are Eurotunnel converts, too. They are extremely flexible outside peak times, ie let you move forward your crossing free of charge if you arrive early or take a later crossing if you get held up.

Here's another tip: if you want to sneak on an earlier crossing they normally don't mind. Ie if they call the Cs but you're a D, just get in the queue with the Cs. We've done this several times and never have we been pulled out to wait another 20 mins, they just wave you on.
  • reeally silly question here, but is this going by train on the Eurotunnel?? Or going on the ferry, hence why they are asking for car details??

Also is the fare per car?? So i could potentially take me, Dh and the kids to france for the day for £22??

    thanks

Eurotunnel is the train which takes your car through the tunnel from just outside Dover to just outside Calais. (Not to be confused with Eurostar, which is the passenger train from London to Paris, Brussels etc)

Yes, the fare is for car + passengers.
  • Thanks gus, yes I was totally confused then!

better apply for the kids passports then..another job I keep putting off...coz it costs money!
  • We always book a crossing time to allow plenty of time for the traveling just in case. We are just about 2 hours away normally but sometimes with no traffic at the Dartford Crossing we sail through (sorry about the pun).

Always just go straight through never use the terminal outward unless a comfort break is needed. Worst case we had was being put into another queue alongside all the called through letters but we got on the same train as it wasn't full. EuroTunnel very careful to make sure their trains are loaded as fully as possible. Coming back not always so easy.

We were very early (4 plus hours) for our crossing on return from holiday one year and automatically looked us up the next options some of which they would charge for. I think we paid about £3 extra to come about 5 or 6 crossings earlier at a more busy time and i didn't mind that at all.

The deal advertised here is a same day return crossing. If you fail to come back in the time limit they reserve the right to charge the full one day crossing fare and you will get the same again coming back. You cant do two cheap returns like this to enable you to do a weeks holiday!

I don't think a booze cruise works any more financially and we treat it as an indulgence day out subsidised by good company, great food and cheaper booze.

We normally have a three course luncheon at a château restaurant or hotel. Then drive about admiring the scenery or walk round a town or two. Then back to Calais to a Wine Market to get some supplies. Well it would be a shame not to!

What is so fantastically mind boggling is that on returning from France they greet you at the check-in computer screen with your name! They scanned the licence plate on the way out and connected it with your booking.

We have often mused that if EuroTunnel can do that surely the UK authorities can do the same and catch all those unpaid parking fines on foreign vehicles getting out of the country.

I like that idea - right son, you're nicked, your car's impounded and going to get crushed in 7 days. Or pay us that £200 fine right now, sunshine. ;-)
