Limit monthly payment on an O2 contract
Hi
My daughter is on an O2 contract which has only 100 inclusive mins. Now, I've shown her how to check her remaining minutes but she's a teenager, so isn't always going to do that. This month she didn't resulting in over £35 worth of non-inclusive calls.
The account is in my name so I called O2 to see if I could set an upper limit on the amount of money that the bill could reach but they say they don't do it. After all, why would they do something that is likely to cost them money!!!
There's another year left on the contract so moving networks isn't an option. O2 wont even let me move to a different contract with them.
Any advice please?
Thanks
Al

They should let you move up a price plan so you get more mins. Surely £5 more a month is cheaper then £35?I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0

They'll allow you to move up in terms of price plan so you can get more minutes, but unfortunately there's no way to put a cap on your spend, if you want a cap then you should go to PAYG.
Maybe if you forced your daughter to pay for her mobile phone bill she'd be more careful about what she used, when I was a teenager I bought my own pay as you go phone, I was occasionally given a tenner for credit, but it was my responsibility to monitor my usage and pay for most of it, every so often I'd get a few quid to top up, but that wasn't even every month. When I started spending about £30 a month and I had my own income I decided it was time for a contract and I've never really had anything in terms of overage since then.0 -
Me i would get a PAYG sim take the O2 sim card and use in another phone . Bung here the monthly O2 amount and thats it .

Three and Tesco do this sort of capping, but Three specifically state that it should not be used for budgetting, and if you do manage to exceed a limit you will still be be liable. People on this forum suggest it does work well though
Tesco only do it on one tarrif.0 -
Thanks for all he replies. She will be paying for some of this bill which will hopefully make her more careful in future.
Will just stick with O2 until the end of the contract and move then.0 -
I've had same problem with orange - my son was going over his minutes constantly - with the result that when his contract came to an end we had the pick of the phones in the shop apart from iphones:(. I agreed to increase his tariff by £2.50 which gave him loads more minutes and so far that has worked. I asked orange not to give any credit after the allotted minutes but they refused - as has been said why would then cut off their own profit supply! My son is paying me back each month... albeit slowly but he's getting better at staying to his limit.Bern :j0
