    Anything come on screen?

MSE AV doesn't help if you are low on ram, avast is lighter, your last hijackthis log was quite bloated. Disk cleanup doesn't do much speed wise.

No nothing on screen. It's not booting up at all just a whirring noisy which isn't the fan. The unit has 2 "deco" lights which flash but that's it.

I got rid of AV and zone alarm and use the windows MS security essentials.

I took it to be cleaned up again after my last hijack log as machine crashed completely and I was daunted by the clean up task.

Just had the news that my desktop has gone to the computer heaven. The motherboard and graphic card have gone and not worth repairing.

    So decided it's a laptop.

    Advice - which one:
    Dell Inspiron 1545 Blue (Intel Pentium Dual Core T4500, 3GB, 320GB, 15.6", Windows 7 Home premium) (£300)

    or

    Dell Inspiron M5030 Laptop (AMD Athlon™ V140, 3GB, 250GB, 15.6" screen, Windows 7 Home Premium) Black (£280)

    thanks.

  • Intel.....

(like Ford vs Vauxhall or BMW vs Audi, its just personal preference...probably little to no logic)

M5030 CPU is very poor. Passmark CPU Mark 691.
    1545 CPU passmark 1567.
    Go for the 1545.

Or this HP laptop has a passmark of 1270 and priced at £263.

Damn I ordered the M5030 from Tescos for £263 delivered to store but now thinking of ordering the other one to also be delivered to store and returning first one. :o

HP one ordered as well now. Luckily both avail. for collection at same time so I can just return the Dell one when I collect it!

Thanks for help and advice :)

Generally a good idea to touch a laptop before you buy it, the keyboard layout/size, weight, and quality of touchpad and mouse buttons vary wildly.

  • I am considering buying one of the above laptops for my son but I'm assuming they don't come with the necessary microsoft office software for him to do his school work on?

Any advice on what would be the best option would be appreciated - are there any reasonably priced models that come with the stuff pre-loaded?

The HP mentioned above comes with 'office starter" which is a limited version of the program with Word and Excel. Maybe that's enough for him? Pretty much everything else can be done with free programs.

Otherwise, you could download Libreoffice which is a free program that has the same functions as word, excel etc and is used by millions of people without problems.
  • Thanks for that tip.

The HP one is now priced at £279 but it seems worth considering - the lad has money stashed away so he might even afford it all on his own.......
