15 years ago everybody paid for plastic bags. Then Tesco had the bright idea of giving them away. So everybody else had to.
I've got to laugh at the OP though for whinging about a penny!
Youre missing the point, we are paying twice for the same thing.
Its being ripped off that i object to.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
In M&S recently I bought more shopping than I mean to and asked for a carrier bag.
The assistant said I had to pay for the bag , so I started putting stuff back until the bag I had could carry all of it.

Next time it happens I'm just going to leave all my shopping at the check out. It'l cost them more than a carrier bag cost to put it all back again.:Dmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I don't object to paying for carrier bags, as I think that we all use far too many of them, and being charged for them is a fairly good incentive to make you remember to take your own.... BUT what I do think is unfair, that M&S only charge for bags in their food dept not throughout the store. Surely a bag is a bag is a bag, if they want to help save the environment they should not be giving away free carrier bags with purchases of knickers or cushions or shoes either!!
TBH I nearly always remember to take my own bag, and it's not like I'd do a weekly shop in M&S so the most I ever have to pay for is one bag.0 -
Later in the year the whole of Wales will be having to pay 5p per bag!
I have two of those big bags for shopping at Tesco which I take every week without fail anyway - the amount of space we save without plastic bags filling the kitchen is huge. I do try and only use plastic bags when I need them, but I cant help but feel that if the bags were not so damn breakable then I would be able to fit a lot more in them in the first instance (so use less bags) and secondly I would actually be able to re-use them, rather than having to throw them out because they have a huge rip in the side.
I do agree with less waste and all that but I think the point is shops need to look at other alternatives and listen to the customers, Id feel better paying for a bag that would last rather than one that would have to be thrown away as soon as I get home (tesco is a good example)MFW 2020 #111 Offset Balance £69,394.80/ £69,595.11

Based on how many carrier bags you see thrown away, I think it's a good scheme. Its pretty easy to tuck a carrier bag in your bag, I find.

When I was a youth (35+ years ago) the only supermarket in my area that charged for bags was Kwik Save, and there was no Tesco in the area at all. Also Kwik Save used to put out their old packing boxes so customers had an alternative - something that never seems to happen today. Back then even the "free" bags were made of much stronger stuff than these days where most of the time you now need to double bag just to ensure your shopping makes it home.
If I'm making a special shopping trip, I'll take my own bags; but as I'm not a handbag toting sort of guy :rotfl: impulse purchasing requires I use a shop one (or two) And I once bought an M&S sandwich for lunch, didn't want to pay for a bag for one item and was then stopped by security trying to leave the store with it in my hand (Local M&S, you exit back through the store after going through tills)
p.s. My local Budgens doesn't charge for bags but they make a contribution to charity for each bag you don't use as I believe some other supermarkets do, which seems a much better way of doing it to me.Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.0 -
I don't mind paying a little for bags (I usually carry some anyway) but, what I really get annoyed about is the fact that I am paying the store to do the advertising for them.
If you have to pay, then the bags should be completely plain otherwise , they should be paying us to advertise for them.0 -

for some reason the only place i remember to take carrier bags is Tesco. i was not happy the other day when i realised poundland were charging for carrier bags, so i only bought half the stuff that i could carry to the car in my hand. and it infuriates me when some places ask if you want a bag. i think it looks bad walking out of a shop with something in your hand as if you have not paid for it.Just about to give up!0
