Paying for carrier bags.

Options
It incenses me that lots of companies now are charging a 1p for carrier bags, the first was Thomas the baker, now even the bliddy pound shops are doing it.

Surely the price of bags is sorted out in the price of the goods, an overhead if you like.

I now always try to carry one in my handbag.

Robbing bar stewards.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

15 years ago everybody paid for plastic bags. Then Tesco had the bright idea of giving them away. So everybody else had to.

I've got to laugh at the OP though for whinging about a penny!

Based on how many carrier bags you see thrown away, I think it's a good scheme. Its pretty easy to tuck a carrier bag in your bag, I find.

Go on, admit it - you were about six 15 years ago, weren't you?

Well I wasn't, and I can assure you carrier bags were not charged for.

In my local Budgens, there were two signs next to each other. One said, "For the sake of the environment we will now be charging 5p per carrier bag - PLEASE DO YOUR BIT AND BRING YOUR OWN BAGS!"

Next to that was the other sign that said, "With your support we have raised over £500 for charity from the 5p carrier bag charges. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!"

    Mixed messages or what?!

Yes, indeed. It's really nothing to do with ecology on the part of the supermarkets. They're just taking advantage of the nagging from eco-loons to save money. Even Friends of the Earth admitted plastic carrier bags were hardly a major issue.

Free carrier bags cost the big boys literally millions of pounds a year. They are delighted to charge and make a token donation in lieu. It saves them a fortune.

Take food purchases at M & S to a clothing checkout and the carrier bags are still free.
