weighted blankets

Can anyone help?
I've just been told after a sensory assessment on my daughter that she needs a weighted blanket....
I've had a look online and they are ranging around £100, Im still waiting for a decision on DLA and simply do not have any spare money for it...would you inform the DLA that this has come up?
For future reference do you know of anywhere in england that makes these well?

I did look at making one myself but didnt want to get it wrong.

Thankyou

I have never heard of these before despite many years working with children, however a quick google and Ive found out a bit about them, they sound like a wonderful idea and appear to be very helpfull. if you google 'make a weighted blanket' there are several websites with instruction, I think the thing to do would be to start with a small weight to the blanket and increase it if dosent have the desired affect, obviously the weight will depend on your daughters age and size as you dont want her to be uncomfortable. Good luck and I hope this helps her. J

Thankyou I had a look at this but it doesn't give any diagrams and I can't even sew a button on a shirt lol
  • Is your daugther at a special school? I worked at one and we had several students who needed these blankets, we would provide one per child-if your daughter has had a sensory assessment and needs one then the school should have one- (health and hygiene-not sharing, we also kept some spare for when they needed cleaning) maybe you could ask if you can borrow it until you can afford one. Carry it to and from school isn't ideal but is better than nothing!

  • Hi, I have ASD and have found my weighted blanket invaluable. I did extensive research on making my own, but same as you i can't sew. but despite that, making it is a huge effort and just sourcing the pellets for inside the blanket seemed quite costly. once you add up all the materials and time and energy and skill taken to make it, i found it easier to pay 100 or so for a made up one.
I got mine from 'sensory direct' - as an adult i needed the largest size and weight. however i didnt have to pay VAT as it is a disability aid. i was also banking on DLA coming through but i needed it so i put it on a credit card months before my award finally came in.

on another note, have you tried looking at disability charities?
can't post the link but i use 'funder finder' to search for trusts etc usually.

    hope this helps.

Some main stream schools have special units (I know cause I did supply in several of them before getting a permanent job) does it have one of those? Who sent you to get the assessment?
