Got my stove... now to install...

I got my wood burning stove today - at the carboot! What are the odds?! It's a Morso Squirrel Standard and we love it.

Now 'all' we have to do is get the thing installed. There's an old fireplace (or something) behind a piece of plyboard and a chimney which we understand was used for a gas heater some time ago - so it might be lined, I suppose?

We'll need to have someone come and rip the fireplace out/make space for the stove but do we get someone to do that before the installer comes around or does the installer do that (we've got the number of a builder)? Also, assuming that we can get the space for the stove done by the builder, what sort of ballpark price could I be looking at for the install?

I am sitting down and prepared for anything. Even if it is over a tenner! :rotfl:

For starters it will need to conform to part J b regs so a builder is going to have to do his homework. Best if you can get a hetas approved stove installer to do it for you.

The liner will have to be taken out as gas liners arent rated for stove / fire use, so you'll have to have another liner fitted.

Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for the stove at the bootie?!Nice one!

My stove is being installed today. I went for a company that covered it from start to finish. They sent a builder/bricklayer round to knock everything out and build a new box basically. I wanted the whole thing brought out with blocks so the stove did not sit so sticking out. Then a plasterer was sent and now 2 weeks later after letting everything dry, today I have Hetas installers beavering away fitting the liner and will be installing the stove.

I'm paying a bit shy of £2K for all the work.

Very excited!

Lucky you finding a stove at a car boot, that was my first choice but have ended up buying an Aga Much Wenlock from the Aga factory shop.

That's a really good price compared to what I was quoted. My quote was £3.8k, to include a £600 Little Wenlock, so about £3.2k for the work you're getting for £2k (and my quote was a couple of years ago). I ended up doing mine myself, with a bit of help from the local blacksmith who made and fitted the regster plate. I didn't install a liner (avoiding a large expense) and to date, there have been no disadvantages of not doing so.

I had mine installed about a year ago (Morso 6100). Stove cost about £1100 and it was £1000 including VAT to fit it, which included a flue liner.

That price does not include the Stove, I paid £870 for it before Christmas at the Aga factory shop. It's all fitted now, looks lovely but they said I have to wait 3 days before lighting it to let all the sealants go off, it's going to be a long 3 days.

I also think that is a good price (not that I know much about the trade!!) I paid £3000 for a large nook to be taken out, cleared up, sandblasted, pointed with lime mortar, concrete floor, slate tiles fitted & a Charnwood 8kw with a hood fitted by my friendly HETAS chaps.

Very reasonable considering its size.

So, here's where we're at.

Dreadful builder came round and did some work - he has now gone and won't be coming back!!

Sweep came round and checked the chimbley, did a smoke test, checked upstairs and says it does not need lining. Also says can fit it - I am a bit nervous about this bit as I am aware of the building regs but am unsure as to the extent that they apply here. Sweep can issue a safety certificate and is insured.

What to do?

Oh and I need to get a hearth made. Slate from up the road!

How do we feel about the sweep fitting it?
