Advice please - put deposit on car and just found out it was an insurance write off

I'm afraid you are going down a cul de sac involving Trading Standards. The dealer will produce his original ad. copy (clearly stating Cat D) and the half-trained TS Officer will claim that it doesn't mean "written off". So what, that loose term has no enforceable or worthwhile meaning and an easily won case for the trader if it goes to court.
If you really don't want this or any other car from his stock (not sure if he would be interested in dealing with you anyway) I don't see how you expect to "win" back your deposit.0 -
I am with the OP on this simply having the words cat d buried in advert is trying to deceive people, especially if some people do not know what cat d is.
At the very least it should have clearly stated this car is registered as a cat d write off in a completely separate sentence.
There are too many dodgy car traders out there that use sneaky tactics to hide things,I doubt TS will do anything as they are useless but let's hope your CC company refund the depo back on card.0 -
can he prove you saw the advert and didnt just see the car on the forecourt
what im getting at is what if you never saw the advert - was it written anywhere else on the actual car
and is catorgary d not an economical write off
every time i put fuel in my car you could say that its an economic write off. i had to buy a headlight bulb the other day that was worth more than the car
it doesnt take a lot to make a economic write off now adays0 -

You say hidden in jargon - can you post the complete text of the advert so we can see how it looked?0

It mentioned cat D in the advert so they have covered themselves to be honest, Does the autotrader not
have a section where they explain abbreviations used in the mag? Pretty sure they used to.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Come on that would mean people doing research for themselves rather then ranting off about it on here looking for the answers they want to hear rather then the answers which are right."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0
