Avon - is it worth it?

In an attempt to help clear our mahooosive debts a suggestion of becoming an Avon rep came up .... just wondered if anyone has had any experience with Avon?

Can you really make decent money? I'd be doing it as well as my full time job so it would be an evenings/weekend thing. (actually - another point - where would I stand on the tax-front?)?

I remember a friend of mine did it years ago (must be going back 10 yrs now) but she really didn't make any money out of it so gave up.

Just wondering if its worth it in the long-run or would I be better looking at some other way to earn extra income?

Thanks

I did it 3 years ago amd made little/nothing. Though a friend now does it and has a little team, she makes about £150+ I think.

I did Ann Summers Parties and I made on average £200+ a month for 4 night work.

DEBT FREE for the first time in 10 years and with savings!

  • I used to do it and found it alot of hassle. The amount of time and effort it takes doesn't equate to the pay you receive.

I'd say avoid it, you will make more from mystery shopping etc...

  • As with anything you do on a self-employed basis, you get out of it what you put in...I used to be an Avon rep for several years, mainly because I like the stuff and didn't have a rep where I lived...it can be a bit of a kerfuffle, so you need a bit of time to put into the preparation in order to make any decent cash. But it is possible! Good luck with whatever you do :)

PS - It works on a three week campaign cycle, so not your average pay cycle of weekly or monthly, in case that has any effect on your decision :)
  • I asked exactly the same question not long ago.

I thought about it and cancelled my appt with the Avon team leader. I heard you have to pay for your catelogues and start up kit. Also I was under the impression you have to put in a lot of time and walking the streets in the dark and cold evenings wasnt appealing. I appreciate my quailty time spent at home with my hubby too much to earn £20 a week or whatever you can earn.

My friend does avon and is the only rep in our area (she covers about 200 houses). Christmas is her busiest time where she makes about £120-150. But the rest of the year she makes about £15-20 a month. Not a lot. She covers a lot of ground but takes her dog with her so he gets a walk at the same time. She has to pay out for her catalogues and bags.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

The problem with Avon is that if you buy online and go through Quidco you get a big percentage back as a cashback, so you are really stuck trying to find non internet savvy buyers to sell to. The rest of us are buying direct at a discount and often getting free delivery and free gifts as well when we shop. I did have an Avon lady for a while, but I really couldn't afford to buy through her once i realised i could save money by buying direct.

I had a bad experience with avon,I felt I was forced into doing it by 2 agents who invited themselves into my house!
avon never sent the right stuff or didn't send enough stuff,
then stupidly I gave a customer some goods before she has paid as I always had done with her but she found out I was leaving and decided not to pay me the £100 she owes me-I am still payin avon now and it has gone against me on my credit score, they are also very rude when I ring up to make a payment!
I also worked for ann summers and found I made quite enough (£100 a party)
but beware....you have to pay £3.50 a week for your £500 kit that they send you, and if you miss a payment they cancel your order!
    good luck whatever you choose.

Why is a person that handles your money called a broker?!
  • Right - that's a big NO to Avon then - thanks for your help.

I've signed up for mystery shopping and done a couple already - also am ebaying quite a bit ........ will have to have a rethink about another money earner as my ebaying items are going to run out soon!

I once thought about doing Avon too but decided against it as you have. I think that internet shopping is going to spell the end of the door to door rep in the not too distant future to be honest. Hope you find some other ways to make a bit extra - have you had a look at the Great 'Bit On The Side' Hunt Thread?? You might find some ideas in there - If you come up with anything great let us know!

    Regards

  • Do you have a good digital camera?
Have you ever thought of selling peoples ebay bits for them that havent the time to sell them? These people are called trading assistants theres a page of inof on them on Ebay.
I used to have one. I piad the fees etc and she took a share of the profits. This worked very well for us and she could do the listings to suit herself at a time good for her. There is a strong trust requirement but you can look on ebay yourself to see how much things have sold for
    Good luckx
