Electric bill

Hi Guys,
just wanting some advice, We moved into a one bedroom flat on the 26th November so not even two months.
I have just had a bill frm Scottish power for £300.00 that means £150 per month.
I do realise it's been a very cold winter but considering we don't use the emersion to heat the water this seems very expensive and was just wondering what other people's bills are like.
We do have storage heater's but no tumble dryer or anything that uses alot of electricity.
my usage is as follows:
7705kwh domestic economy 7
5684kwh domestic economy day
total 13390
If anyone could help would appreciate it.

What do you use to heat the water? Electric shower? Kettle? They all use the same as an immersion but at a peak rate rather than an off peak rate.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

That sounds like a huge amount of electric being used. There surely must be a mistake!
I have used 8212.4 units (not sure if these are the same as kWh) in 23 months. I know this as I had a new meter fitted in Jan 08 and for the last two winters I've had to supplement my heating (1 single crappy gas fire) with a couple of oil filled radiators. I used 735 units (total) since my last bill in September and I was charged just under £100 for it. Granted I try to keep my electricity use to a minimum but even so my pc and tv are on a lot and I've always got the kettle going. I also rely on kettle and shower for hot water (emersian heater bust). I also use the microwave a lot too as my oven broke too! I'm with BG on economy 7 (Click Energy 6 tariff whatever that means).
Hope that helps.

Hi,
did you take a reading when you moved in, and have you got an up to date reading now, that you can compare to the readings on the bill, also make sure that the dates correspond.
It may be that previous occupier had been getting low estimates and did not bother to give a reading on leaving.
Have a look at bill, it will tell you if it is an estimated bill, and beside each reading it will say, A, actual, C, customer or E, estimate.
When taking readings ignore the red figures.
How to read meter.
Oh, and those 13390 units should've cost over £1200, so something far wrong.0 -
HI yes I took a reading when we moved in and it's as follows:
26th November (actual reading)
Domestic economy 7 night
6686 kwh
domestic day (actual)
3390 kwh
04th Jan (estimate) econ 7 night
7566 kwh
04th jan (estimate ) econ day
4603 kwh
22nd Jan (actual) econ 7 night
7705 kwh
22nd jan econ 7 day (actual )
5684 kwh
Any sense??
Thanks
I only use the usual, the only thing I would use is a tiny little electric heater to heat the living room, I have an electric blanket which is always swtiched off when I go to bed and I hardly ever heat the hot water.0 -

that is your reading, not your usage, you need to deduct the previous reading,
your usage is as follows:
7705 - 6686 (start reading) = 1019
5684 - 3390 (start reading) = 1294
and I reckon your bill should be £250 ish.
Did you check bill to see if they were using correct start reading and if it was an estimated bill?0 -
AH okay got ya,
Yeah the start date was the one I gave them so it's correct, however is £300 not a little excessive for two months in a one bed flat?0 -
Hi,
good, so they have the correct start date, did you supply them with your start readings, 6686/3390, and did they use those?
Are you sure you have the readings the right way around, I would've thought over the period you would've used more on the night rate, mostly heating, than the day rate.
You say you don't use the immersion heater, so how do you heat the water, and what type of heater is the 'tiny little electric heater'?0 -
You are heating the living room on more expensive peak rate E7 electrcity. The whole point of E7 is to use storage heaters supplied overnight on cheap rate E7. Everyhing you use outside of those 7 hours is charged at a higher rate than standard. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi,
since you seem new to Economy 7, get a coffee and have a wee read of this, give you an idea of how it works, and how, if you plan a bit, can help save you money.0 -
Hi claireloupul
Storage heaters can be expensive to run, for example, it you have a 3 BAR storage heater (the heater will use 3 kW in 1 hour), then it is possible for that one heater to use 24 kWh in one night, 168 kWh in a week or around 672 kWh over the month. Multiply this by the number of storage heaters you have in the property and the total kWh consumed will add up. If you also use any electric plug in heaters/fires this would also increase your consumption.
