California - flight prices & road trip plan!

Hi
I hope I'm posting this in the right place - apologies if not - I'm quite new to this.
BF and I are planning on going on a road trip around California in September for a fortnight and I wondered if anyone had any opinion on what a normal/cheap/expensive flight was? At the moment the best I can find is £485 return pp with British Airways - that's from Heathrow to either LA or San Diego. Does anyone have any opinion?
Also, our plan is to do a big loop - Orange County, LA, up to San Francisco, into Napa Valley, over to Yosemite, down to Las Vegas, and back to LA or San Diego, depending on where we fly back from. That's just the general loop we want to do - haven't decided where to stay or how long for. Does anyone have any view on which way around to do the loop and any places we should stop/stay and places we may as well miss (appreciate time will soon run out!).
Thanks in advance.

there's a similar thread running at the moment which may be of some help.

Thanks very much!0

The flight price you quote sounds pretty good to me, OP.From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0

Thanks for that. My first reaction was that it seemed a good price - was about to book - then panicked, as I realised I wasn't really judging it on anything!0

Yeah check out Virgin offering similar prices, and you can get an open JAW!0

I would suggest doing the loop in the opposite direction. DH and I and the kids did a similar holiday a few years back and were advised that route 1 from San Francisco to LA is best travelled north to south as that means driving on the right hand side which is right on the coast. There are many laybys to pull into easily to admire the view.
The route we followed over 3 weeks was
LA
Grand Canyon
Las Vegas
Death Valley
Kings and Sequoia National park
Yosemite
South Lake Tahoe
San Francisco
LA

Thanks for that - sounds obvious now you say it, but that hadn't crossed our minds! Will check out Virgin too - thank you.0
