If you can smell gas, turn off your gas at the meter and call the gas board sharpish. You cant risk waiting with gas leaks.
Open windows to ventilate your property and do not turn any lights on or off etc until the leak has been seen to.
From Gas Guide.Org
Gas is usually a safe and easy way to heat your house but it can also be potentially dangerous if a leak occurs or an appliance is faulty.
If you smell gas or think that you may have a gas leak somewhere then you should call Transco Gas Emergencies line straight away. Open your windows and doors to let air in, make sure all gas appliances are turned off and turn the gas off at the mains if possible. Do not turn lights on or off and avoid using other electrical switches and appliances as this could trigger an explosion. Do not smoke, light a match or any other naked flame.
Do not try and investigate the problem or attempt to fix a leak or a faulty appliance.

Probably a faulty valve on the fire. As 'muckybutt' says best call the gas company as they will identify any leak and disconnect your fire if its faulty (this is usually free if its a genuine leak/emergency). Don't panic, and please let us know when you're sorted (so we know you haven't been blown up!)

I agree - call the gas board - it is free and not worth the risk. I moved into a new house last year, had a gas smell, builder friend said not to worry but I did worry - called gas board, they came, there was a gas leak they fixed it - all for free. Was well worth following up my nagging worry.0

Remember they will only fix it if the leak id their side of the meter. If its 'your' side of the meter, they will on ly disconnect the appliance and make safe at themeter. Its then up to you to get the actual leak fixed by a Gas Safe engineer.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Sorry if I gave duff advice about the cost of calling the gas board. I still advocate doing it..don't risk gas.0

Yes call Natioanl Grid, it is a free service, even if they don't find a leak.
They will disconnect and cap off the fire if it is this leaking. If it is on the pipe work then they will disc the meter.0
