Hi, I have always wanted a stove but was put off by the high price of the appliance and the work and expense removing the exsisting fireplace etc, now I have seen this seemingly ingenious stove that simply "slots" into my exsisting 16" opening. It seems to good to be true, and I have seen it at less than £350, any thoughts on it? Surely it HAS to be more efficient than my current open fire is, and as it is only 4kw rated, I don't need a vent brick installed.

Stoves are usually sealedfrom the room about a foot or two above the top of the stove (by a regiuster plate). The whole surface of the stove then allows airflow over it (convective heating) and the whole surface to radiate the heat into the room.
This system seems to seal the stove from the room near the very front of the stove. It looks to me like 90% of the heating area (that is the stove plus the stove pipe - which it may not even have) is simply wasted, with the heat from that 90% going up the chimney. Only the front of the stove seems to heat the room.
From what I've seen, I'd certianly say it's questionable whether it is more efficient than your inefficient open fire! It would be very interesting to get some profesional installers views on this, and see if they agree.0 -
As people on here know I'm not a fan of cheap stoves but it would most definitely be more efficient and provide more heat than an open fire. Probably worth a punt at £300 odd pounds.0

Thanks guys, yes I was thinking the same thing about the body of the stove being inset so the heat would be wasted, but with the fire being enclosed, the heat will not be lost as quickly I don't think. Anyway it is bound to be an improvement on my open fire.

We just had an inset stove installed on Thursday. It was installed into our open fireplace within a couple of hours and, so far, it is fab! It is really warm and clean, I love it already.
Here is a link to the one we have http://www.hamletstoves.co.uk/stoves/solution_inset.php
Good luck if you decide to go for one.0 -
Looks toasty. I am going up to the retailer's place in Lymm, Warrington to see the stove and check the dimensions etc before I buy, it will cost me £20 on the train/bus but I would rather that than be saddled with £300 of stove I cannot use

Update: Stove is in situ and working and sweet mother it's hot!! Cannot believe I did not do this years ago. I have burnt 3 small logs and half a shovel of smokeless coal since 8.30am and it's now 6.10! Would deffo recommend this little stove.

Hi Spinning Sheep
I am a first time poster, but wanted to say I am glad you are enjoying your inset stove and thanks for keeping us updated, because I have been hoping you would. I suggested this type of stove recently to my daughter so will pass on the info that they are really good, thanks0 -

I'm so pleased to hear that it's in place and that you are pleased with it, such a difference to an open fire isn't it?
It sounds as though you'll be saving loads of money too! :T:T0 -
Yes very different to my open fire, different kind of heat.more even through the room.I had about 6 people turn up on spec to see it tonight! All of them loved it and one is going to get one herself after seeing mine! I know it's not THAT cold at the moment but my heating has been on 15 degrees and it has hardly fired at all since I lit the stove!very very happy and for £300 I doubt you would find better.
