As we were due to take OH's car into the garage this afternoon I asked them about it. They said to put a good litre or two of oil in and leave it to run for 15 minutes. We went straight to Halfords for oil, put in a good couple of litres - but it wouldn't start, at all

And after putting the oil in what does the dipstick say now?

My mother checked her oil levels today for the first time she owned her car and the dipstick was bone dry.. not a drop of oil anywhere on it, yet her car was still continuing to run perfect. I don't know if there was a little dribble of oil at the bottom of the tank which has kept the car running, but she went straight to Halfords and bought 5l bottle which was enough to bring the levels back upto the maximum.

I suppose that counts as an oil change then. Change the filter next time.

I hope she hasn't over filled it not many cars have 5 litre capacity, and given that there would have been 2 litres below the dipstick anyway, it does sound rather a lot.

Are you sure it wasn't a 4.5L bottle?
What car is it? Incl engine size and fuel type.

It could have been a 4.5. I'm not entirely sure, she just said it was around the 5L mark. It's a Ford Focus 1.6.

When I checked her dipstick, it's a little above the maximum mark but my car has always been above maximum too and I haven't had any problems.

I had been going on at her for months to check oil levels and stuff and was surprised to see the dip stick completely dry and oil-free.

When she saw it, she said "What does it mean when there's no oil on the dipstick?", I replied "It means an unhealthy engine blowing up in your face when your popping down the motorway, causing you to crash into any car around you". I love scare tactics, I'm sure she'll be checking it frequently from now on. :D

A 1.6 Focus only holds 4.1 or 4.3 litres total. It must have had oil in it too run so if she has put 4.5 ltrs in it she has too much!
