The contravention says 99 - stopping on a pedestrian crossing or crossing area marked by zigzags..

    So it's the crossing
Ok, we're a touch closer here.

You need to prove that there were no zigzags. The photo will show that. If there are none, then you need to find exactly what act of parliament the notice is issued under. If the letter has Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 somewhere in its heading, then you have a defence if (and only if) you can prove the absence of zigzags and the absence of an official pedestrian crossing constructed under that act. A row of studs beyond the stop line of a traffic light (there is a difference) has no legal effect providing you entered the area legally then circumstances outside your control caused you to stop.

The devil is in the detail. The more detail you can give me from that letter and from the location itself, the more I can help you.

    Guilty , next please.

    Why?

It's definitely not in box junction.

Looks like OP may have passed the white stop line when traffic light was green and stopped just before box junction (presumably because the exit out of the box was not clear and to enter the box junction would have been an offence).

Lights probably then changed to red, and other vehicles began to enter the junction from other roads. Clearly the OP had to stay where they were or else cause an accident!

It is an offence to stop in the area of a pedestrian crossing but obviously NOT when there is a vehicle in front of you. The only space which the OP could legally drive to is an empty space on the far side of the box junction. If no space exists, there is no choice but to stay put.

If my guess of the circumstances is correct, there is a good chance of a successful challenge / appeal.

Thanks - Thats pretty much what happens regularly
There may have been a car in front of which decided to take a chance and move forward. Or someone to my left turning left doing the same..
