Ford Fiesta problem

Hope someone can help :

My OH has an 11yr old Ford Fiesta - nothing special, but it serves its purpose.
Yesterday, on her way back from doing school run, she noticed a problem. When trying to accelerate in either 2nd or 3rd gear,
the engine revs to over 5000rpm, with hardly any pull.
Don't really notice it in 4th, but is is there a bit.
The only way to get car up to 40ish mph, is to allow car to get there gradually, without really accelerating too much.
Before I take it to garage, can anyone shed any light on what might be wrong.

Thanks

sounds like the clutch to me,
get her to start the car and put the handbrake on,
then put in second gear and SLOWLY let the clutch up as if she was driving away,if it starts 'revving' higher and not stalling then it is a good indicator of clutch wear,

please if it is do not go to Kwak fit or similar

  • Is it all the time? Or had she been holding it at biting point for a while before it started doing this.
Perhaps on a hill at traffic lights or at a junction.

No, it is not when she is holding on the bite point on a hill, or at traffic lights.
I drove it this morning, and it seems to be doing it all the time.

Anyone got any idea how much a new clutch would cost?

Around £200 - £250 depending on hourly labour rates.

Ouch - car is only worth about £400, so probably not cost effective to continue. We'll have to see.

Well if you continue to use it, it will only get worse and eventually fail completely.

Had car checked, and it is definately the clutch.

Phoned around local garages for a quote for replacement - they varied between £265 and £320.
Due to high cost of replacing versus value of vehicle, we have decided not to proceed. Infact, OH has already been looking around for another car.

What does anyone think about disposing of the Fiesta -
do we just sell it for scrap, or is it worth advertising it ( explaining why etc ), hoping that someone will possibly buy it for spares,
or is capable of repairing cheaper by doing it themself.

    Any ideas would be welcome.
