The Direct Debit Guarantee is all well and good on paper, but direct debit originators often don't stick to it, so the whole scheme is best avoided.

Originators? It's the bank that has to honour the guarantee.

Originators are supposed to honour the guarantee as well, but you're right that the bank has to enforce it if the originator fails to honour it.

Just to add a point, the direct debit guarrantee scheme is a bit misleading.... yes you will get an immeidate refund if the bank has made a mistake, however what they dont make it clear is it could be upto 6 weeks for them to investigate the mistake and provide that refund. In that 6 weeks you be having all types of fun with the mobile/electric/gas/loan/TV/.... company.....

Actually, I've found my bank to be very helpful if an originator has made a mistake. They do give me an immediate refund and reject the direct debit with a reason code denoting "amount not due". The problem is it's still a time-consuming process so I prefer to prevent errors from happening in the first place by avoiding direct debits.
  • But the question is, is it legal to charge for the same thing 3 times on one account?
Surely as they only post one bill from one account number, it should be one charge per account surely?

Well its in the T&C's so you agree to it when when you agree to the contract.

And as was stated higher in the thread, some networks change a lot more. Is it morally right, maybe not. But business aren't run on moral grounds they're run to make money and this is an example of that.
