Which vacuum cleaner should I buy?

I'm looking to replace my Dyson cylinder vacuum which is getting rather old and tired. Could anyone give me some advice as to what the best cleaners are at the moment? If Dyson really are the best and worth the money, I would be willing to pay the premium for one, but if other cleaners are just as good/better, I'd really like to know!
My house has a mixture of hard flooring, cut pile carpet and loop carpet, and I have a cat with a tendency to leave fur all over the place.
I saw on the Which? website that they did a review of vacuums in October 2006 - could anyone tell me the results of the Which? tests please?
Many thanks

I havent' seen the Which revews but I did read some reviews in the Cat World magazine as we were looking to replace our vaccum. Personally we are looking at buying the Miele cat & dog TT. We are still tempted with a Dyson Animal (especially as it would come with a 5 yr guarantee - great marketing/idea Dyson after so many poor reviews of your products.)
Not sure if this helps but I'll try and find the magazine if I can to give you some idea of the poorer models they tested.0 -
Having had a Dyson and tried other vacuums I would now only ever buy Dyson. I always buy bagless cleaners and have bought cheaper ones than Dyson but they were nowhere as good. Worth the little bit extra you pay.now mum of 4!!!0

I'll go along with the Miele Cat & Dog, I have one myself having seen some great reviews about it and have not been disappointed.
Brilliant suction power and as the name suggests, ideal if you have pets.0 -
Hi, I have just checked the which report (I have a free month which I forgot to cancel....not very moneysaving I know.)
They have various comments re; pet hair. They recommend miele vacuums. particularly the miele cat and dog 5000. also the S4510 and the S4510 they have over 70% + in their effectiveness tests. The dyson DCo7 animal also scored well. The Bosch cylinders did well but for general performance not pet hair.
sebo felix 1 came out as a best buy too. Dyson vacuums all scored over 60%.
Don't buys are "Hoover Purepower U3485, Morphy Richards 73362 Pets and Vax V-008U Performance were all very poor at cleaning carpets and at retaining allergens."
What they say about uprights and pets are that they are the best at cleaning due to the motorised heads. However the miele cats and dogs picked up better than tyhe uprights on test.

I would recommend Morphy Richards. We got one and when it developed a problem the staff were really helpful and we got a replacement. It has a two year guarantee and is good for picking up pet hairsLost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I am on my second Dyson and still unhappy. The first one lost suction after we used it to pick up plaster after a DIY job (it's a big no no for Dysons), the second one is only a year old and has already lost suction. Also it doesn't pick up crumbs or cereals from carpet or wood floor
However I know of people that are very happy with theirs so maybe I have just got a bad one?
My best friend has a Miele and she LOVES it!0 -

I think we may have caused ourselves the same problem with ours, which has cleaned up after I don't know how many weekends of DIY! Maybe I will try a new filter before buying a whole new cleaner.
Thanks for all the comments - either the Miele or a bagless upright look like the way to go.0
