Should i get the HPI check from a dealer

Hi Guys,

Looking at buying a 3year old car which is worth around £5k. The dealer we are looking to get it from offer to do a HPI check on the car (think its linked with RAC and covers everthing on it).

Cost they have quoted is £80-90 which having read some posts on here seems quite steep!

From what i have seen http://www.freehpi.co.uk/ is pretty much the same as leads to autocheck and is only £20! Am i best doing that rather than the garage one?

thanks

Most dealers will provide a HPi check for free, they have no doubt had one carried out when they purchased the car.

Buy elsewhere if they will not provide one free.

    Yes, go elsewhere.

This "dealer" is trying to rip you off over the HPI, so what will he be doing to you over the cars he sells?

  • All dealers i know automatically do an HPI check using an online interface, then if required they print off the certificate. Its just normal procedure for them when they get a car in. So, if they are trying to charge you 80quid for this print out then thats a serious rip off. Id be tempted to do one yourself, they are a lot lot cheaper than that and will give you some piece of mind.

Also worth pointing out that just because an HPI report is showing up "clean" doesnt mean the car has a clean history. Ive bought many write off cars in the past which have all shown up HPI clear! And likewise, i bought a car which the original owner took out a personal loan to buy, and that car was shown up as being on finance - even though the personal loan company verified that the loan was nothing to do with the car!

I believe HPI have a compensation scheme if the data they supply turns out to be wrong. IIRC you will only get compensation if you do the HPI check yourself.

I have said to them that they can provide it free because i expect they did it when they bought the car/it was traded in! waiting to see if they accept and they have sold a car! lol

Why don't you run away from this "dealer" - obviously a rogue happy to rip off gullible punters!

To be blunt, I would not even deal with a garage that tried to pull a trick like that.

They seem like an Aurthur Daley outfit.

Apparently this scheme has so many exclusions that claims are unheard of really.

Just say to them, forget your £80, I'm going to do my own for £20, if you want to be helpful and print out the bit of paper on your computer that's up to you.
