and some is is not. Utube do not encourage/enable copying as a blanket measure, because they do not want to get involved with the detail of every media piece.

No-one can pronounce on the legality of an activity without knowing the details of the items of media, and the rights reserved against each piece, by who, and with what justification.

You shall not copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, or otherwise exploit any Content for any other purposes without the prior written consent of YouTube or the respective licensors of the Content.

Straight away it is violating the T&Cs of youtube. Thats before you get to the legality of the copyright of the artist.

Now given the childish name calling of the OP im guessing he is not ripping free to own music from youtube as he would be able to find that elsewhere.

Yes i may seem a bit arsey about this but i know a few musicians and a couple of small labels who are constantly at war with people who do this - they are cheating people out of their deserved royalties.

One track is really quiet so I whack the volume up - next track comes on and I have to dash for the mute button and so on.

Was just wondering if anyone could advise on how to normalise all the tracks so that they are at the same level...

    Back on topic...
The software that's made for this job is mp3gain.

but what is that based on? Once again I make the simple point that you can not judge based on thin information. I can declare any "terms and conditions" I wish as part of you reading this post. I can not enforce, at law, any of those terms and conditions. Utube wants a good defense if there is any claim against it regarding publishing any material that has (valid) restrictions. My original post was about the complications that exist in the real world that make a judgement impossible without full particulars. Utube is not free to invent any terms and conditions separate from the law. It can assert rights, but that does not mean it has rights.

It has to have the "rights and restrictions" statement to have any chance of defending any material that does have valid protections.

All that said there can be unlawful copying of some materials in some ways from UTube. It's just that we can't judge without the details.

Windows Media Player has the option to Apply volume leveling across tracks on a CD when burning if that is any use?

it is complicated yes, but look at what the OP is having to use to record it - that in itself tells you that what they are doing is illegal. Would it not be available to download for free somewhere as a proper MP3 if it wasnt? Or would Youtube not have a download function for music that was not copyrighted?

Don't assume you know that using a piece of software is always for an unlawful purpose.

Don't assume that you know why UTube does not provide certain functionalities.

Don't assume all copyright-free music is available from download sites.

You may be right in all three assumptions. You may be wrong. That's why it's more complicated.

Yes, it's sound check function does this.

Alternatively, since iTunes isn't everyone's cup of tea, try iVolume (available for both Mac and Windows).
  • encoding bit rate is your problem in nero. you can tweak nero encoding settings to encode at a slower but higher bit rate to encode those mp3s at 120 to 320.

I used nero to 'normalise' the Brothers In Arms cd as I felt its a very quiet cd. But it added distortion so ive never bothered again
