Normalizing mp3s in Nero or other free software help please?

Hi - I have a load of mp3s mainly recorded off Youtube using Freecorder. I have made a cd in Nero 9 - but have noticed that the levels are all over the place.
One track is really quiet so I whack the volume up - next track comes on and I have to dash for the mute button and so on.
Was just wondering if anyone could advise on how to normalise all the tracks so that they are at the same level.
I have only installed the burning part of Nero because I don't want all their bloatware. Is there an app on here that is any good or should I use something like Audacity? If so does anyone know what settings to use to get good quality mp3s?
Or reccomend any other free / cheap software that could perhaps batch file convert?
Has anyone used the lite version of Soundforge?
Any help or advice received with thanks.

There are plenty of ways to normalise track sound level, and Audacity should be able to do it no problem in batch mode (if you want to take that route, look up the help info on using chains).
However, if you do that, you have to accept that you will permanently alter the media files and there will inevitably be some degradation in sound quality - though whether you will hear any difference in quality is a matter for debate.
Possibly a better solution is to use a media player with Replay Gain, as this allows the player to change its gain automatically for each track. If you do this, you may however need to use a batch utility to update the ID tags with gain info.0 -

What he said really. You have to remember that the sound quality will be also dependant on how it was uploaded to youtube too.
then again i do believe that your just getting free copyrighted music and that's illegal so ill ask for this thread to be pulled unless you edit it."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

So by your logic anyone that records a film off the TV to a video or DVD player anyone that records music off the radio is also breaking the law?
I do not download music or films unlike millions of other people. And I have recorded roughly 20 bits of music

In essence yes - though with TV shows you have paid yoru license fee which is why you have things like iplayer and PVRs.. you dont own the copyright to it do you? No i didnt think so.. same as filesharing - your getting something for free."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

It is not like filesharing at all - you seem to be very confused.
So I can record things - including music off the TV because I have paid a license fee or subscription - and keep them forever.
However I can't record something off the Internet that I also pay a subscription for?
iplayer lasts for one week. To the best of my knowledge they don't put films - like Indiana Jones - which was on the other day - on there.
However I could have recorded that to a video, DVD recorder or PVR and kept that forever. What is the difference?
Like I said - get a life - or go and grass me up...0 -

You really don't have a grasp of it do you. You are stealing music. The mps are about a quid each from Itunes yet you think you have the right to steal music.
TV films are different and the reason they don't have films on iplayer is because the bandwidth would be eaten up and would take you days to watch it.
And BBC have paid to show the Indiana Jones films - this means that you have PAID to watch the Indiana Jones films through your license fee.

Thanks fwor - your post was helpful. Unfortunately the other ill informed muppet is typical of many Internet trolls with nothing better to do with their lives who post useless, unhelpful sh1te to somehow validate their being.
I could go to any post on any forum and say "What he said really". And then go round making threats, criticising and then attempting to back them up with no argument or basis in what I am saying.
I don't do that because I am relatively well balanced and have a life to lead. I am also not a fully unpaid member of this imaginary force of Internet policemen.
In all honesty it amuses, saddens and astonishes me that people are that lacking in their lives that they waste time reading random strangers posts and then posting - "What he said really". Well durrrr - that was equally unhelpful and pointless - but if it gave you a twinge, you know, down there....
If you are going to be a troll try and do it with some wit, some intelligence, humour - something that doesn't just scream - I am a fat, dribbling loser with anger and control issues, I hope the warden doesn't catch me and give me my shot!!0 -

The only reason i am criticising you is by saying that you are stealing music.which you are.Unless you can prove to me your not

I did. Your stealing music.

Your just waffling rubbish now
Why accuse people of being trolls when they are pointing out that what your doing is wrong because you are stealing music.
now that was a very random post from yourself but you can stop stealing music now."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
in fact the legal position regarding recording broadcasts for home use (time shifting) has been recently changed. It is nothing to do with the BBC "having paid" for the right to transmit. The changed law applies to all broadcasters (BBC or fully-private companies). This is why home recording is now (under certain conditions) quite legal.
Other types of downloading may or may not be lawful, again depending on detailed circumstances and the legal position of the material. (eg there is lots of music that has become free of copyright restrictions).
This is not a thread about the legality of copyright material so I don't think giving judgements about the legality of certain activities mentioned in particular posts is correct or in fact, possible.
Beware posts that declare an activity lawful or unlawful on the basis of thin information, in a thread that has nothing to do with legalities!

and some is is not. Utube do not encourage/enable copying as a blanket measure, because they do not want to get involved with the detail of every media piece.
No-one can pronounce on the legality of an activity without knowing the details of the items of media, and the rights reserved against each piece, by who, and with what justification.
