Cyclists riding on pavements

Options
It really irritates me the amount of mountain-bikers riding on pavements and it seems to be getting worse. The worse culprits seem to be the yellow jacket mob going to or coming back from their workplace.I wish the police would enforce the £500 penalty charge.

    Irritates you in what way?

I really don't mind bikes on the pavement, and would rather they use the pavement than the road, on the basis they give way to pedestrians.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I use the pavements when there is a cycle path on them. Sometimes I use the pavement when there isnt because most car drivers dont give you the room they should o the road.

What really gets my goat is cyclists on the road when there is a cycle path for them...

Pay road tax and Id be happy, else use the CYCLE PATHS.

Oh yeah and what about pedestrian who, dispite the massive white painting of a bike, still decide to walk along the cycle path and give you evilsas if you shouldnt be there...next time i see them walking on a cycle path im just gonna run them over...

    RRAAAAAHHHHHHHH>>>>BANG

    Thats my head blown..

I cycle quite a bit and admit I cycle everywhere; pavements, road, grass.

Although I do try and stick to cyclepaths I find it highly irritating having to stop or slow down alot where I pass side roads and especially roundabouts. They way I get around this is to go onto to the road for these obsticles so that I flow with traffic.

I ensure I don't go near pedestrians, and ring my bell just incase people are easily scared of me going by especially when they have dogs.

Sorry just felt like having bit of a rant as been tring out cycling the 8 miles to work.

Got to agree. They are a menace. How many times have you been walking along and seen a bike coming towards you, you step to the side, they move at the same time. You step the other way they move again. I've had to stop and stand still to avoid being hit.

I don't walk on the road. They shouldn't cycle on the FOOTpath.

I'm sure there must be a lot of accidents involving bikes colliding with pedestrians. Some of these will no doubt have very serious outcomes. If a vehicle hits a person they (should be) insured. Who'd pay out if a bike hit someone and cause injury?

I've never had any problems with cyclists on the pavement (maybe I'm lucky that way), only with those who seem to think the red traffic lights don't apply to them and so go careering through the junction whilst pedestrians are crossing.

What irritates me is the number of places where the pavements have been designated shared spaces for pedestrians and cycles.
It's impossible to travel quickly and safely, so you either have to ride at 5mph (which, if I'm travelling 20 or 30 miles can easily triple the time it takes to cycle along the shared sections) or ride on the road (which completely defeats the purpose of a shared route)... Ho hum.

Fortunately we don't have too much of a problem with cyclists using the pavement when they're not supposed to round here. The few that do fall in to two groups - those who are extremely cautious and deferential to pedestrians, and those who just don't care - no lights, no brakes, won't slow down for pedestrians, etc. etc. I'm fine with the first group; the latter ought to be shot, though!

I'm a cylist and a pedestrian, and whilst I generally prefer to be on the road there are occasions when I do go on the pavement. If I do this, I cycle very slowly with the knowledge that I am not really supposed to be there, and if someone is in my way then I will wait until I can pass them safely.

The other day I was walking home from work, I had just stepped sideways to pass some people dawdling in front of me when I was yelled at by a cyclist and forced to jump out of the way as he passed me at some speed. A few seconds later and the idiot would have ploughed straight into me.

Does that mean that a vehicle that is zero-rated for VED/"road tax" (e.g. some models of Ford Fiesta, Seat Ibiza, etc) should stay off the road as well? If not, how can you argue that it should apply to bicycles but not these vehicles?

Some cycle paths are hopelessly badly designed, and cyclists find it safer to stay on the road.
