Help my cat is a 5am Alarm clock.....

Help - My rescue puss has been with us a week... (i cant post a pic as i have no idea how to)

He has started to wake the whole house up at 430 - 5am :eek::eek::eek::eek:
and we thought the twins were bad enough.....

He is a large cat maine coon x so i am wondering if i am feeding him enough in the day?

The rescue centre told me that he had 2 pouches of food + dry biscuits... he will only eat felix pouches... It dosent seem enough for him?

To me he does seem a bit on the thin side?

My cat is set for 6am!! (OH gets up then, and he has learnt that soon after it is feeding time!!) :rotfl::rotfl:

The cat gets most annoyed at weekends when getting up time is about 7.30am! he has to wait. :D

Have you tasken your cat to the vet since having him, to check his weight / worms etc, as I don't really think any of us can tell you if you are feeding the right food or too much without looking at the cat and its current weight / state of health etc.

What amount of food did the rescue centre suggest? did they say anything out the cat being under weight, what weight is the cat now.

    Good luck

If you give in you'll end up with a highly trained feline alarm clock. Mine prefers the bopping me on the nose gently to wake me, followed by ramming a furry paw up my nose if she doesn't get any result from that.

http://www.simonscat.com/catmando.html if you haven't seen that one before btw. Sooo true (apart from possibly the end).

  • He is a 'big' cat.....just built that way he will tower over all the neighbours cats.

I am taking him to the vets tomorrow for his last lot of jabs so i will ask him then - rescue centre tested him for everything when he was handed in as he was a 'complete male' cat but he has since been 'done'

I just dont want him to go hungry

We have a cat with main coon in her and she is exactly the same, big and thin.

She wowls constantly for food but stick to your guns, they are natural grazers who would eat 24/7 if you let them.

Dont give in, ignore his wowls for food in between meals.

Milk is bad for cats, something to do with their kidneys I think.

The vet will reassure you whether he is underweight or not.

Shut the bedroom and the staircase door.
Start as you mean to go on and let him know who is boss.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I think Dizziblonde is right, if you give in you just reinforce the behaviour. My two get full access to the whole house (other than the bathroom) but if they wake either of us up in the night they get locked out of the bedrooms.

We sent them on holiday to my OH parents whilst we went away for 3 weeks and they weren't allowed in the bedrooms. A few days in we had a text saying that they were clawing at the doors at 6:30 and it was getting earlier each day. They were obviously very very hungry so they were getting up to feed them but wanted to know how to stop it haha. We told them they were being manipulated and just don't feed them.

Mine now know that when they hear the alarm that's when they can come and fuss us for food.

The Jim Reeves song spribgs to mind

"Welcome to my world, won't you come on in" - lol

George gently sits on you, at 6am, if that doesn't work, he climbs on the pillow, lays down and dribbles!!!! on you - YUK!! and if that doesn't work he then starts to chase the other two around the house - leaping over the bed, its easier to feed him, then go back to bed.

Mia our black & white husky, opens the oven door and removes the tray pans and throws them around the kitchen until you get up.

    They aren't daft - lol

Oh how well I know that feeling,my chin is covered in scratch marks from me being prompted..I've so far been woken up by her tail hitting my face, her bum in my face,a paw in my face & my mouth & a pouncing cat landing on my squishy bits that women dont have...

Yeah it's just a matter of sticking with it and riding out the storm - mine's now finally taken the hint and we have to bodily evict her from the bed on occasions or she'd sleep all day (I plonk her on the top of the basket of laundry I'm carrying and bring her downstairs that way). I read of someone whose cat had learnt how to turn the TV on - of course they'd fed it... now every morning at 5am they get the wakeup call.

She now happily curls up between the pair of us (sometimes even with her head on the pillow too) for the duration.
