I think a better thread title would have been: 'How the young are stuffed'.

One of the many reasons why the young appear to be stuffed is the high cost of buying or renting private properties and the low availability of social housing.

Some of the reasons for the high demand that is constricting them is because there are more households (more relationship breakdowns/lone parents, more single person households, people living longer).

How is this the fault of their parents or grand-parents?

So infact borrowing money to invest it BTL no different from someone without any equity getting a BTL mortgage.

On the surface I would agree, but at the time my Dad would never have been given a £50k loan and would have got the deposit to buy a second home together. But due to the magical money pit know as houses he had the opportunity. Yes we are talking in theory of course as thankfully him and many other boomers didn't do it.

But even if house prices only go up in line with inflation after 25 years when you have paid off or greatly reduced your mortgage you will be in a similar position.

I hope he has made best use of his money to provide for his pension.

Oh how pensioners today have had to work so much harder than those of generations who went before ;)

As you are no doubt aware the legal grounding for pension payout is shakey to say the least.

I wouldnt worry, just hope the younger generations are happy to pay it. If not, you're on your own.

If only Brown hadn't raided the pensions of the boomer generation, maybe they wouldn't see BTL as the "safe" option?

Good point, but how many problems where caused by people pulling out of pensions to buy into the BTL dream?
