Hi
Came on here for advice 7th Jan with regards to buying a netbook for uni. Went to Currys same day and was recommended an advent eclipse e300. The girl said as it was bigger than a netbook and had better memory it would b more suitable. Anyway brought it home used it few times and then yesterday just as was doing final prep for my exam it just shut down like it was doing an update and when restarted it just keeps saying "Missing Operating System"
I looked up the computer and have since discovered that it was a refurbished laptop which I was not made aware at time of purchase. As a problem has appeared within 14 days what are my rights in relation to an exchange or refund? Will be going back to Curry's tomorrow but just wanted some advice before hand.
thanks

Yes, they'll exchange it.
Also, I'd be very surprised if it was a refurb model, as they're only sold online - if you looked it up on the website, you'll see the refurb models listed alongside. The only way to tell would either be on the label on the box, or to see if the serial number sticker has been overstickered with a new 'refurb' serial number.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Why go back tomorrow ? Why not today, within 14 days ? At least a phone call or email.0

Thanks for the advice, the reason I thought it was a refurb was when I opened it, there was no instruction manual or booklet, the box did not state which model or anything and it was only a sticker on the actual laptop. Then when I looked the model up it stated it was a refurb. I am going in with it today, I just wanted to see if anyone knew what rights i had to a refund or exchange, bearing in mind I have now used the machine. thanks.0 -
There will still be a warranty, even on a DSG refurb.
But if they offer you an upgrade or a refund, then do take it-Advent is a pretty rubbish own brand, and DSG is a bad place to buy a laptop (or indeed anything).
By the sound of it they had a refurb in stock that they needed to get shot of and you fell for the 'better memory' story.
What OS is it running? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Who on here recommended you go to Currys name and shame:rotfl:
PS Hope you get your desktop sorted. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I thought I would check it prior to taking it back and lo and behold, it is now working, so Currys will not take it back!! I'm angry because this will no doubt continue periodically however I know I wont get any response from them as I agreed to the sale because of the apparant 'better memory'. Will ensure I am better informed when I next buy a product!!
Only one thing that drives me crazy is when I am typing it frequently goes back to a bit in the earlier sentence and then overtypes what I have wrote. Its driving me insane as I have had to retype this post several times because of it. Any ideas why this is?0 -
You've discovered unhappily the main reason for not purchasing at DSG-the non-existent after sales service.
What warranty have you got on this laptop?
If it crashes again take it back and say that it is not fit for purpose. The fact that it was a refurb does not take away your SOG Act rights.
Alternatively, do a Factory Restore on it yourself-back up your data first obviously. If it's an OS glitch, that should solve it. If the hard drive is faulty, it will not. But either way, you'll be no worse off.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I'd take it back and demand an explanation as to why you have been sold a refurbished laptop when you clearly wanted , and presumably paid for a brand new one!
Make a fuss about it if you have to .. speak to a manager and get a refund definately!0
