but no offence you are talking... a couple of years??
you may live in a different area, have a partner, dependent children or pets... phil you just cannot predict your lifestyle for then so this thread, sorry, is a bit irrelevant and pointless :)

I dont think the world will change vastly in 2 years. I won't be moving areas as I would still want to live near my Mum & Dad, but it is fair point things might be different, but probably not too much.

There seems to be an assumption amongst some posts that singletons don't have mortgages and only pay rent.

Being pedantic aside - costs such as mort/rent is shall we sayed fixed regarless of number of occupants, council tax attracts a single person discount if you live alone or are a lone parent with children under 18, standing charges on power phone etc do not reflect number of occupants but usage does.

Everything is variable though it is definately cheaper to have more people if you take the bottom line figure and divide it by number of people it works out less per head as some costs do not allter and it costs the same for the tv and light to be one regardless of how many in room etc.

Not true. A singleton can live in a 1-bed flat, whereas a family of 5 will need at least 3 bedrooms.

yes true. 2 people can live in 1 bed flat as well, but regardless of one or two the mort payment would be same

i.e. mort taken £32,000 by one person would attract same repayments as it would if same mort taken out by 2 people

I rent a 1 bed flat to use when working as long way from home, my rent is exactly the same using it for one person as previous tenants paid as a couple . But it could be argued that it worked out cheaper per person because devided rent by 2.

My main dwelling is a 3 bed semi, and my mort payments were same when married as when I divorced (apart from normal interest changes) I dont get a discount on my mort or rent for being single nor do I get charged extra for them if more people sharing cost.

Living as a student the costs are vastly different.

Halls with food (plus other bills in)
Cheap bus travel/ no travel costs
Parents buy clothes and extra stuff.
    Free internet

It is a world apart from living in the real world.

Beth - yes, but Phil is talking specifically about living alone, and about moving into somewhere where he's living alone from the start. Therefore in his case, he will at least have the freedom to consider only a studio or one-bed property unless his budget permits a larger place.

dont worry SP its a place I'm sure you will never need to experience;)

I live on my own but I cant see how my budget will help you in any way as I am fortunate and enjoy a good income and therefore a good expenditure:D

anyway fixed costs come to about £1300 i guess then its food and spends on top. (and handbags too of course:j )

Not all students live in halls and even those who do don't necessarily live in ones that provide meals. As a student my parents never bought my clothes or extra stuff. I used my student loan and money earnt from part time work for that. I only lived in halls for my first year then moved into shared houses where bills including internet access was paid for by all of us.
