Attention NEW T-Mobile customers! (and Vodafone ones too!)

Hi all,

I've just signed up for a new T-Mobile contract, and the new number they've given me starts with 074.

The problem is that I cannot receive any calls or texts from anyone on Vodafone! People on ANY other network can call and text me fine, be it from Orange, O2, T-Mobile, Virgin, a BT landline or whatever - and also I can call and text all of them perfectly fine too. I can even call and text people on Vodafone - but Vodafone users cannot call or text me at all! They type my number into their phone, press call, and it just instantly disconnects without even beginning to ring. Texts get sent and don't give any error messages, but they never get through.

Having spent hour after hour this afternoon and evening on the phone to both T-Mobile AND Vodafone trying to figure out what the problem is, nobody has ANY idea. T-Mobile have been resetting my account and changing settings left right and centre, but nothing makes any difference. I'm absolutely certain that the problem is because I have been given a new 074 number, and i've only ever seen 075, 077, 078 and 079 numbers before, so I think that Vodafone haven't updated their systems to allow calls to this new 074 number range. But trying to get someone to understand this is impossible!

If anyone else is on T-Mobile, PLEASE check with a friend on Vodafone if they can call or text you - particularly new T-Mobile customers who have been given a new 074 number! Any advice at all on what to do would be very, VERY much appreciated!

    hi
    sounds very unusual.
i have just moved to tmobile but they gave me an 075 number and that works fine with all networks, including vodafone. i am porting my usual number over tho. i presume you didn't have a previous pay monthly number that you could port over. if the networks are of no help in solving the problem, if you have a payg sim already, you could port that number onto your new tmobile contract.
  • Or just send off for a bunch of free payg simcards from a selection of companies, find one with a number you like, and then port that number over?

(can you port a number from a payg sim which was never credited? I honestly don't know now I come to think of it)

I'm a new tmobile customer (1 week) and was given an 079 number which works fine. Perhaps they can give you a new number?

This problem has been going on for years. Whenever new mobile prefixes are released, there are problems receiving calls on them from other networks, particularly from abroad.

When I first became an Orange customer in 1998, I insisted on being given a number on the original 0973 (now 07973) prefix because it was well known that other Orange prefixes had problems receiving texts (and sometimes calls) from other networks, particularly from non-UK networks, which would have been a problem as I was working in Germany at the time. I have kept the same number ever since.

Always avoid new prefixes if you want to be sure of receiving calls and texts from all networks.
  • Why not just ask for a new number and if they give you a non 074 number and the problem continues then it's obviously not the issue.
  • Thank you so much for the suggestions everyone, just wanted to say that it's finally sorted out! T-Mobile agreed to change my phone number - I now have one beginning with 075 and it's working perfectly across all networks!
