I was thinking of changing my phone/broadband provider as totaly fed up with virgins non people freindly customer services.i read advert in paper for talktalk phone and bb for £24 i thought ok fine contacted them by e-mail for someone to phone me regarding transfer setup etc. I received a call today from them asking a few details then was told the actual price would be £39.10 per month ??when i asked for a break down i was told there would be an extra £15.32 for a loop exchange fee as this applies to poeple living in rural locations some distance from the phone exchange after i explained i live less than 1mile from major exchange i was told it was to cover conecting to the outside green box in my street as i wasnt conected on explaining i must be to be getting phone/bb and also pointing out that their advert states one call and they do all the rest for you mac code transfer etc. She told me she could,nt explain why didnt know why and suggested i stay with my current supplier ????? Has anyone else had this loop exchange fee (rip off charge) explained or justified to them

The extra charge is because talk talk have not unbundled the exchange you are connected or have no spare capacity so have to buy the broadband from BT Wholesale to resell to you. This costs talk talk more so they pass the charges on to you.
check here to see whats available at your exchange

I would avoid TalkTalk if I were you. I have had major hassle with them over the last few weeks; their Customer "service" isn't located in the UK and is complete S*** Plus I have just discovered they are charging me for 0870 and 0845 numbers even though I am on an Anytime bundle and according to their web info these number are included and therefore should be free.
Also, I have just had a bill from them and they have:
a) hiked my line rental charges from just over £7 a month to £12.50 with no notification.
b) billed me for 6 weeks (starting 1st Jan) with 4 weeks in advance.
I have had enough and have requested a MAC number. I wonder how long it will take them to get around to providing this?

Don't get me started on the talktalk customer-we-don't-care team.
They wrote to me to say my tariff was being increased from £14.99 to £19.99, I pointed out (by email, as 5p a min to call) I had an 18 month contract expiring Oct 2011. They failed to address the point I was making, finally they emailed me to say the same thing.
BUT they've just taken £19.99, the Daily Mail (:o) just published an 0800 number for them due to massive customer problems so I rang that, after 35 mins & 4 transfers I was told the best they could do was £16.99.
I've told them they're in breach of contract, have also asked for MAC code (they are obliged to provide in 5 days) 7 have told them not to even think about a cancellation charge, but I am worried that they will pursue me for one & this will affect my credit rating.
Anyone know where I stand with this?
Actually I think I might start a new thread with this, so sorry if you see it twice0 -
Hi happyally,
From what you have said it sounds like you spoke to someone who hasn't got a clue as neither descriptions of the 15 extra are true.
Basically if your exchange doesn't have our LLU equipment installed then we are unable to offer you the 6.99 package with inclusive Broadband which is why we have to charge you an additional £15 which is to cover the cost of your broadband.
Its possible that we will never install our equipment in your exchange due to its size or the available space for equipment however if you check the below link you should be able to get a live date if we have any plans for your exchange:

Any further questions just let me know.

Same here after 34 e mails from them and 30 mins on a phone call that no one wants to answer give talk/talk a wide berth they are a joke they killed tiscali which was a cheap not great ISP, they turned it into a useless one with its customers moaning like hell, like others I could go on and on, the rep on here seems a good guy but he works for a useless company. Sorry I am not usually this angry.0

exactly same happen to me
joined TALKTALK PRO phone and broadband package on march 2010.
after 11 months, my local exchange is still out of full capacity.
using talktalk 'ip streaming broadband service (runing speed 1.5 M)' with extra £15 on top.
personally recommended use T-mobile mobile broadband dongle (running speed 4M) costs only £15/ month without contract, which is unlimited p2p download during offpeaktime 00:01 - 16:00 and striclty internet browsing only during peak hour.
made serveral complaints to talk talk forum.
that was what talk talk replied.

Never thought of switching to a Dongle, but the more I think about it the better I like the idea (thanks for that). I assume on a desk top PC you would just connec it via a USB socket? I've never actually used one before. Are there any issues with the connection getting dropped? and could you play online card games using it as your internet connection at peak times?

http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/daily-mobilebroadband-plus/usb-stick-610-payg/
very simple, plug this dongle into the pc usb socket, then it promts and follow the onscreen instruction.
£5 cheaper if buy dongle in t-mobile store (=£15), not online (not£20).
Promotion : Buy your first day of Mobile Broadband for just £2 and get the next 30 days absolutely free
meaning = buy the £15dongle in store and credit £2, can enjoy the first entire month internet broadband completely free of charge
also ask for 'remove adults filter' at the same time in store.
although it stated that 2gb allowance data per month, but nothing will be charged if go over.
believe or not, as recall, i went over 2gb just in one night.
the tmoible dongle connecting speed (4M) was very superfast, (while awating home broadband connection)
and even better than my current talktalk 'ip streaming (1.5M)'
could not switch, cos been locked up 18-months contract with talk talk. but will dump talk talk once contract expires
between the peak time 16:00 - 23:59, it is strictly internet web browsing only.
off peak 00:01 - 16:00, can able to using anything unlimited download, online game, watch streaming film tv online, p2p download etc.0 -
Thank you for taking the time to explain all that. I will definately give it a go.
