Dishonesty at Work - Advice please

If it bothers you that much you could snitch in a roundabout way. Ask your senior if they know how long X is off for as you need them to clarify something. However if their absence isn't affecting your work then unfortunately I think you are best keeping your head down.0

Orrin makes a good point. If the OP takes their concerns to management what they're saying is the staff who take lots of sick days are incompetent, their managers are incompetent and HR is incompetent.
Not a position I'd want to find myself in.
That's why I wondered if there was a wind up merchant behind all this, they like to get other people to throw themselves to slaughter.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Sounds like you know alot about the OP and their work place...something you want to tell us??

Not sure what you mean?
I've had a lot of experience of this sort of stuff from the shop floor all the way up to management level.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Irritating as it is to feel that others are doing less than you and being rewarded equally, I agree with the posts that say unless monitoring attendance is someway part of your role you should avoid getting involved.
Many moons I was given a piece of advice that I still often call to mind:
Concentrate on making yourself look good by looking good, not by making others look bad.0 -
I was presented with the opportunity to dobb someone in who has annoyed the hell out of me for years. As I'm leaving my boss has asked me to minutely detail how everything works including how far in advance we 'send' our near-finished product.
I put that my department stick to the published schedule. I could have added the line that person X (who works on them after me) then sits on them for 2 weeks before sending them on again but I didn't. I figure she'll get rumbled eventually and I don't want the bad karma, she can have it
Another thing to consider is that there's a good chance you will run into these people in the future if you all work in the same field.Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.100 -

Yes this is very true of how I work now anyway. HR aren’t incompetent, (very few people) and they always take their added sick days when managers are on holiday. Anyway I've decided not to say anything, it doesn’t really affect me apart from maybe having more work to do. As long as my pay cheque keeps coming they can do as they please. I am sure one day they will be found out.0 -
I think that's the best attitude to have. If you work around different companies and industries you will see that there are different attitudes to minor fiddles like absenteeism or expenses. Some places are very strict and others they don't seem to care.Credit_Jake wrote: »Yes this is very true of how I work now anyway. People taking a bent sick day when the manager is away is nothing new and trust me if they wanted to crack down on it they could. Often times it's just not worth the aggravation for a company to get tough so they tolerate a low level of dishonesty.0 -
^^ And getting tough usually hurts the honest workers more than the p!ss taker's.
Last place I worked, one woman got a disciplinary for being off work on the anniversary of her sons death by car accident.... She didn't think she'd need the day off, but when the memories rolled on in, she simply couldn't face work.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I work for a smallish company (50 odd employees) and for the past year several employees have been taking sick days but not reporting they were off and so it goes unrecorded. (Several departments are very relaxed). This did not bother me, I thought it was their choice if they get found out they'll face the consequences. I am not the sort of person who relishes on being a snitch.
However today I found out a part of our appraisal/ pay rise is based on work commitment and sick days are taken into account if over a certain figure. I am sure one of these people has taken more than the allowed sick days. I am now feeling that maybe I should mention it to our HR manager without any names so they can look into it and make sure it doesn’t happen again, then again I don’t want to become known as the grass! In the two years I’ve been with this company I’ve not taken one sick day. I of course accept that if you are ill and unfit for work then a day off is necessary, if I’m ever ill l I will no doubt take the day off. I just feel some people are taking advantage.
What would you do?
What a lovely human being.0 -

An unjustified and pointless remark there! :j
Credit_Jake, I'm kind of surprised at the negative responses you've had and I can see exactly where you're coming from... Where I work they had this policy and I was the only person who got the full increment of that year's wage rise while everyone else who had multiple sick days got less (and were outraged by that!). I do agree that it's unfair and why should you have to suffer by taking on the extra work, but it is hard to know when it's your place to point such things out...
Caroline73 made a good suggestion, give them enough rope etc. Is it worth the hassle is (sadly) what it boils down to.0
