Dishonesty at Work - Advice please

Hello

I work for a smallish company (50 odd employees) and for the past year several employees have been taking sick days but not reporting they were off and so it goes unrecorded. (Several departments are very relaxed). This did not bother me, I thought it was their choice if they get found out they'll face the consequences. I am not the sort of person who relishes on being a snitch.

However today I found out a part of our appraisal/ pay rise is based on work commitment and sick days are taken into account if over a certain figure. I am sure one of these people has taken more than the allowed sick days. I am now feeling that maybe I should mention it to our HR manager without any names so they can look into it and make sure it doesn’t happen again, then again I don’t want to become known as the grass! In the two years I’ve been with this company I’ve not taken one sick day. I of course accept that if you are ill and unfit for work then a day off is necessary, if I’m ever ill l I will no doubt take the day off. I just feel some people are taking advantage.

What would you do?

I'm sure that when HR look through the time sheets they will notice just hour many days these people were 'missing' and will ask the right questions at appraisal time.

  • No they won't notice it, its hard to understand but the company is quite spread out. If someone if off then very few people will notice. We don’t do timesheets or logging it. It's based on honesty and is why they’ve taken advantage of it.
  • Hello

It's quite possible that although they aren't up to coming into the office (and spreading germs) they are working from home, and their bosses are aware. Or they've made the time up afterwards. I've done it myself when under the weather. Whilst not up to a commute I was reasonably productive working from home in my jim-jams and just informed my line manager by email.
  • Tbh I think its none of your business unless you are in a position of management/prudence where not reporting a financial loss or HR matter would be misconduct.

The fact is you don't even have proof its dishonest; it could well be that they dont realise the impact or know the proper process.

Unless your the HR/Manager/Finance who are directly effected butt out.

I hear this all the time where I work, someone always moaning about someone else who seems to be getting a better deal....

It's not important, seriously.... If these people worked for the company next door would you be complaining? no you wouldn't!

Office/workplace politics p!sses me right off.
Go to work, do your job, come home at the end of the day and forget about it. You work to live... Not the other way around.

I really don't give a flying one about who isn't flushing the toilet or cleaning up after making a cup of tea, I don't care who has the window open or how apparently cold it is despite being 27degree's indoors, I don't care who spends 10 minutes of every day chatting to Fred the cleaner, I don't care if so and so didn't say good morning or if Joe Bloggs was late on Monday because he got p!ssed the weekend...... As long as im getting paid to do my job and the work gets done AND I don't have to lie for people, I really don't give a !!!!!! what people do.

It's nonsense like this which causes bad feeling in the workplace and half the time theirs some nasty b!tch winding up the staff by turning something simple like a person going to the dentist, into "oh he's just having a duvet day AGAIN!!" *b!tch* *b!tch* *b!tch* *moan* *moan* *moan*, rinse repeat and start on someone else next week.

If you really want to complain, I can tell you what will happen.

They'll make the rules stricter and keep a closer eye on employee's, BUT it won't stop these people taking the !!!!, they'll just do it even more dishonestly. It'll be the hard working staff like yourself who will suffer with unpaid absence for being genuinely off ill (for example).

... I am not the sort of person who relishes on being a snitch.

do you relish the prospect of being a hypocrite? unless you do, snitching has nothing for you.

Nobody likes a snitch, least of all those who are snitched to.

Wow I see by the replies that the consensus is to not stick my nose in. I guess I should have explained the situation better however, and no there is no possible way they are working from home. Just thought three weeks unrecorded sick days over a year was a little unfair. Thanks anyway, Jake.

No, don't say anything. I made the mistake of saying a couple of things about my 'taking the !!!! manager' and the rules just got changed and made my working life worse.

He did something stupid and as I was a manager I thought I should tell the owner, so I did. Never again! It basically meant I had to work one weekend day every week, whereas before I would do one or two a month, arghhh.. It so wasn't worth it, and I feel like a twit for being such a grass now.
    9/70lbs to lose :)
  • I'm not miserable, just annoys me somewhat that they can get away with it and still get the same pay rise as me! And then have to explain why we haven't met a target without saying well it would have helped if so and so was here! Of course I shouldn't know about pay rises but that's another story! I'm 23 and have only been in full-time work since uni so have a lot to learn I guess!
