Why go with O2's expensive insurance? There are some very good mobile phone and iPhone insurance comparison sites out there now. You can even compare the different excess charges before buying.

Talk to your house insurance people. I have "outside the house" all risks cover mainly for my SLR, for £12.50 admin fee they added my iPhone as a specified item so it's covered. Far cheaper than a yearly mobile policy

If you are with barclays you can pay for a £5 account, one of the benefits is insurance. They cover my iphone 4, which I did lose at one point and was promptly replaced for a brand new one after a £50 excess. I was very impressed.

As for the iphone 3/3g, the casing is VERY hard to keep intact unless its in a full body case. mine was scratched on the back and even had a crack by the charging port when I upgraded, yet I had never dropped it.

With the Iphone 4, i have it in a bumper case, but also has peel off protectors on the front and back to keep it pristine.
