Calling from Kenya, Canada and Afghanistan to the UK

My Son is a soldier and evertime he goes abroad it costs a small fortune for him to call home. He went to Belize last year and one months 02 bill was over £300.
He is off to Kenya next month and I am tring to find out the best way for him to call home and for us to call him, I thought that the big mobile providers should look after our Armed Forces personel, but can't find one that does. If anybody has any ideas please let me know.

He could always get a a 3 mobile skype phone that has wifi built into and then contact you via skype to skype using a wifi point in the relevant country.0

If you're son is being deployed O2 will suspend his contract for him until he returns. The cheapest way of calling back is really going to be using VoIP or by picking up a SIM card while over there.0
