Looking on the bright side the boss doesn't currently have any real competition, so it there scope there for your OH to set out a game plan to set up his own business in a few years, once he has experience under his belt, and of course a few more contacts.;)

  • It is so tough, especially when you don't have the work experience to fight into few jobs out there.

I started out in some dreadful jobs. One small company the boss had a dreadful attitude, something out of 'The office'. Another time, looking back on it I was sexually harrassed by a chap in an office, didn't realise it until years later when I worked in this field, just felt he was being very over the top and over friendly. He was clearly on heat, humping me at my desk, and generally way over suggestive.

Anyway I digress, what I am saying is clearly any harrassment etc is not acceptable and I would no way suggest sticking at it if that was happening, but in terms of the ego, I think he will have to stick it out.

Get as long on his cv as possible, and keep the work he has done to build up a portfolio. See it as being the time you are finishing out your contracts in Wales as the time to get the months and work on his cv. Together look at what work will be out there for both of you and start looking at a possible relocation for a couple of years. Once you have both got experience under your belts he could come back with a few clients and set up as competition.

In terms of the boss and his perks, he is entitled to them. As you say it is his house and how he chooses to spend his profits is up to him. Your OH is an employee not a partner in the company, and while I think his tactics were under hand over his salary. You admit he is getting some good exposure to the clients and relevant work. I think he needs to look on the positive side at least until August and then both of you look at your options.

Being an employee is not what it is cracked out to be. It isn't like the movies and sometimes it is dreadfully tough. Be there for him, start planning a future. Sounds like a corporate in a city might suit him more.

If it were my husband I'm afraid I'd be telling him to pull himself together and get on with it. He may hate his job, but it is a dead certainty that this attitude is simply going to exacerbate the issues. He needs to acknowledge that it is just a job, a way of earning money and stop bringing his miseries home. It is not forever, and frankly he is lucky to have his health, a loving family and a job. He needs to be actively looking for something else - and stop sweating the small stuff - like the boss leaving early. He is the boss and can do what he likes!
