Classic car written off - valuation help needed!

The problem you now have is that the insurnace company have taken the car away, so if you want it back, I am not sure if they are abliged to return it to you or not.
The fact the valuer said its only worth 900quid is neither here nor there. Once the insurnace company makes you an official offer, you just have to go back and dispute it and show proof of what it would cost you to replace your car with an equivelent one - so same year, spec, model, mileage etc.
My brother had the same problem when his car was written off not so long ago. The insurance offered him 1500quid. We looked on autotrader and the same make, model & year, with same mileage and the same extras (he had leather, full electrics etc.) were costing £4500! We sent a nice letter to the insurance company proving what it was going to cost to replace the car and they agreed to the £4500 without even questioning it. So they are just trying it on the first time, hoping that people will not know any better and accept the cheap offer.
If you can buy it back then great, as a mk1 golf is always collectable now.0 -
Ideally, avoid it being written off if you can.
If you accept the write off, and then buy it back, it will always show as a cat c or d.
Try to find a local garage who can repair it for less then the write off value, or put the parts list together yourself, and try to get the cash to cover it. It may take a bit of discussion though.0 -
You really should have got an agreed value classic policy, Problem maybe that the car is not garaged.
The classic policies i have had are agreed value and you retain salvage rights to the car if you want.
They do not need no claims discounts, BUT all my policies have stated the car MUST be garaged.
Engineer said its in poor condition and the cheapest is £1200 but is it in better condition than yours.
Just checked ebay seems people bid to around £1200 for an decent condition one, Several on there
for £2000 no bids/not sold.
One sold for £175 on the 7th jan. Mouldy interior & needs a roof and other stuff. But given time i reckon
you could source 2nd hand parts and get it sorted for £500 all in.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
It seems although you used a classic car insurer your car wasn't insured as a classic car! If it was before the policy was agreed an engineer would inspect it or an an acceptable company would evaluate the car. I would ask for a copy of the engineers report and see why he actually states it is in poor condition!
Depending on your excess it may be worth doing the repairs yourself, seeing you will pay the excess, lose some NCD, and probably pay a higher premium next year!
Classic car insurance policies are usally far cheaper than regular ones so it doesn't seem very practical to me to be paying for engineers reports on every policy. Some will accept photographs, I have a 21 year old unusual car and its insured for an agreed value of 4-5 times the market value.Whilst mine isn't a classic policy, I could have got one but it didn't offer everything I wanted.0 -

Of course I actually insured mine on photographs and a evaluation from the Jaguar owners club. Cost me nothing. I was making the point if it was classic car insurance the insurance would have probably wanted some verification of its condition and value. The OP stated they thought they had classic car insurance because it was insured by a classic car insurer!0 -
Back to the op though.
When you insured it, did the broker ask for a value, did you have to provide any photos or other evidence, and is there anything stated on the policy itself?0 -

One mans 'classic' is another mans 'old banger'.
That argument has been going on yrs, what is,and what is not, a classic.
Generally accepted to be 25 plus yrs old.
However going by the amount of number plate snobs around here, anything over 5 yrs old is an 'old car' .... lol˙ʇuıɹdllɐɯs ǝɥʇ pɐǝɹ sʎɐʍlɐ

This thread prompted me to google my car, with all its discrepancies, and yes it is a classic car. Even got a photo of my precise car.
Wow. I HAVE got a classic car. Thats cheered me up no end., except its a classic car with no real value, as value is always debatable..Debt free - Is it a state of mind? a state of the Universe? or a state of the bank account?

Maybe because it had been standing since October and had cobwebs on it and was dirty and not as shiny as it usually is?
Why has it been standing since October?.0
