Also how much does a new roof for one cost?
Classic cars are anything 20 + years.
Cheap tax - is actually no tax on cars built before 01/01/73. There is no change in tax for cars after this date. (or at least that was the case when I had my first car which was a 1974 mini, 10 years ago now, but don't think anything has changed.)0 -
Hard to value a MK1 Cab... as to what is worth x amount to one person is worth half of x to someone else... It's the case with a lot of the ageing VWs.... often scene tax kicks in.
I'd do as suggested and try and gather as much back up showing what they're actually selling for... Maybe if you have Photos etc of the car it may be worth signing up to the MK1 owners club and see what them guys say... very clued up.0 -
It seems although you used a classic car insurer your car wasn't insured as a classic car! If it was before the policy was agreed an engineer would inspect it or an an acceptable company would evaluate the car. I would ask for a copy of the engineers report and see why he actually states it is in poor condition!
Depending on your excess it may be worth doing the repairs yourself, seeing you will pay the excess, lose some NCD, and probably pay a higher premium next year!0 -

Will do. I go on there sometimes anyway.0 -

I will ask to see the report I think. That is a good idea. It is just a complete nonsense that my car gets broken in to and I am the one who is left out of pocket....
The scrotes did 2 others on the street the same night and didn't manage to take any of them but just left a load of damage, cost and upset in their wake.0 -
Check your policy, as on top of losing NCD (none will be awarded this year, and you will go down 2 years from any you had at the start of the year), and paying excess, your policy may be one that ends following a write off, meaning you loseout on the remainder of the policy year which you will have to pay for in full.
All this expense might mean it's cheaper to repair yourself and not make a claim at all.0 -

About £350 then fitting costs on top.0 -

Hmmm. I'll check my policy tonight.0 -
buy it back from them or dont let them take it
do not let that car go it will only go up in value just fix it or tape it up for now
even tho its a 1990 it has the look of the mk1 golf at the front and shares other parts so they essentially get called mk1 golfs and will always be sought after. I have a brown mk1 golf in my garage that just sits there and many people want it even tho its a brown 5 door that needs new arches and a respray. i have been offer 1500 cash for that but i wont let it go
i cant believe people still break into cars my mate caught someone breaking into his car and hit him round the back of the head with a suspension strut and he got done for GBH and assault and other stuff becuase he hit him from behind.
so next time he has to tap them on the shoulder first0 -
Check out Ebay for the parts, and if you have any mechanically minded or diy able friends they may be able to help you out. Or if not try source the parts yourself, and look for a local garage with cheap labour rates that might be able to help you?
It will more than likely be a straight swap for the convertible roof, just undoing bolts and swapping over. Might be a bit hard to find, but there are plenty of VW breakers around and you should be able to pick one up.
The lock & ignition may be a bit trickier, if they are badly damaged you will probably need a whole new set of door locks and an ignition barrel. But again, you should be able to find what you need.

Just a quick 5 mins search, and it looks like you would get the car repaired for less than £500 including parts and labour, easily.0
