Central Driving School Manchester

A friend of mine, living in Manchester until recently, foolishly agreed to pay £600 upfront (via bank transfer) for a block of driving lessons back in June. The shyster then made a string of excuses as to why he could neither give the driving instruction (e.g. unwell father) nor refund the money (e.g. business not so good, facing bankruptcy etc)
Due to having other things on his plate, my friend didn't pursue it aggressively enough, early enough, but is now thinking of taking the guy to small claims court. However, he tells me that Trading Standards warned him that without the operator's home address, he may never receive the money back even if the court awards in my friends favour.
Is this right? Would the courts not take steps to ensure that they had the defendent's home address? Is there a way to track the instructor down? I looked on Companies House but the school is not registered there.

The court would require the claimant to provide the home address as part of the initial claim. How else would the defendant receive the court documents?0

There is a website for a Central Driving School Manchester - run by a Jamie Green. Is that the same one? They cover several areas so obviously the instructor may be different. You should also check if the instructor is self-employed or employed by the driving school.
The above company and Jamie Green get poor reviews here:

Including people saying the same - cancelled lessons and numerous excuses, no refunds. That gives the address as 6 Didsbury Park, Manchester, M20 5LJ, which looks like a private house address. If your friend is local he could go round and check.
Googling Central driving School also lists 22 Lindum Rd, Old Trafford, M16 as well.
I can't find a listing on Companies House either - suggests he is listed under a different company name or not listed. Hope this helps.0 -
Thanks Trumpton, yes, it is Jamie Green who has stolen my friend's money. I saw the website you linked to, and both of those addresses, which is why we were unsure of which, if either, might be a home address. Google Street view shows them both to be residential areas. unfortunately, my friend is now in London so can't easily knock on doors!0
