Didn't you leave any for anybody else?
Inour local supermarkets there seemsto be some etiquette about how much of a reduced item you will take and people are happy to share.
Not a chancde where i live, its literally a free for all. Over xmas i decided , this is me the queen if whoopsies, just walked away from the reduced aisles as i couldn't the aggressive behaviour. Punches were literally being thrown.
So for me its grab it and then share with other people.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
greyqueen, you sound like me!!!
Well i feel quite liberated and chuffed today.
1) i DONThave osteripersis!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D
2) i finally made stew and semolina, been craving it for days.
Not sure where to put it, but heres the recipe
2 smalls onions chopped
1 tbsp garlic powder
1/2 large swede / turnip diced
2 large potatoes diced
200 grams brown lentils (great as a meaty substitute);)
seasoning
oregano 1 beef stock cube (optional)
4 tbsp of gravy granules
enough water to cook lentils
3 large carrots diced
fry onions, garlic till soft add carrots turnips, lentils stir and then add water, seasoning, stock cube and oregano. When lentils are partly cooked, add potatoes then cook till lentils are soft. Add gravy granuales and voila done. Serve hot with bread.
Served this to a nipper who doesn't eat lentils etc and he had two massive bowls full. Then we all had semolina, which said nipper had never tried before and ate a massive bowl of that two.
Best of this is, i normally buy extra food in for him, but this time decided to test the waters so to speak. Still have half a pan of leftovers as well.
Also packed our lunch and coffee today in a flask so didn't spend any money while we were out pricing stuff for the office / business set up. So been quite a productive day, also feeling much more positive, saw the sun finally.0 -
re tough times, I'm glad I live in a small cottage. IT would be nightmarish trying to heat a large house. Thanks too to Kittie for the info about the space under the kitchen units. Excellent idea."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

BRILLIANT!!! ooh thanks RAS. I was wondering how on earth I was going to stash all my jam jars and bottle. I could kiss you :T
Great idea...I need every inch of storage space that I can muster, in my small kitchen...but...
I'm ashamed to say that, behind my kickboards lurk spiders, cobwebs, bits of cement and other untold grottiness...the kitchen laminate flooring doesn't extend right under the cupboards...it's all horrible in there..it's not hygienic at all!!
I can give this space a good clean, of course, but I think the spiders will return pretty quick. Any tips for making my new storage a bit healthier??!!
thanks all.0 -
At the risk of incurring wrath, and cluttering, I am a little confused as to how one identifies threads which are allowed to wander a bit, and others which must remain rigidly on track. For example, I mooch in and out of the Shabby Chic thread, and if you just counted threads which had useful information in, they would make up a small proportion of the overall thread, mostly it seems to be thank yous or praise for something someone has posted.
This thread, although it may wander, does tend to stay on track, and perhaps the occasional waver is due to people showing their support for one another during what many are finding a very difficult time. I wouldn't come to this thread looking for a list of tips, without comment, and I think that the more conversational style is what keeps a lot of us in OS rather than elsewhere. The threads which are JUST for information are clearly marked as such.
That's my two pennorth, I'll shut up now. Please don't move us0 -
How can you develop strategies (old style, of course) for dealing with tough times unless you can gauge how tough it is going to get? I really do think the risks of inflation because of food shortages and a potential oil shock do need to be weighed up when people are deciding how to allocate funds and whether to ramp up the gardening efforts. I'm happy to discuss this on the other thread if that is the edict but I think people do need to make informed decisions and this is relevant informationIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Does anyone know what is in vim? I bought some from the carbolic soap site and was just remembering back to the old days when all there was were vim and ajax and big blocks of household soap Then flash came out and the cleaning products started snowballing. That vim is good on the porcelain sinks and I love both the carbolic household soap and the carbolic one for washing us, such a nice clean smell. I have been in and out of a bag of farmyard manure this weekend so was glad to get the gloves clean with carbolic soap
I'm another fan of carbolic soap - its still sold in big pink coloured long bars in a little shop in our local market at £1 per bar - they do long bars of white laundry and dark green household soap too ...its a llittle treasure trove of OS style stuff - bags of soda crystals, fire bricks, drier pulley cords, wooden pegs etc. . . and stardrops too!
When I was a child, you only had Vim if you were 'posh'! My mum and the neighbours had a small box of dry sand to scatter in pans etc and rubbed with plenty of elbow grease
We live in a cottage - its amazing where you can store stuff with a bit of imagination..I store big packs of loo rolls/kitchen roll on the shelf behind the tins - it keeps the tins to the front and saved a lot of scrabbling for the one hat got away at the back of the cupboard....and when we go on holiday, we take off the kickboards on a couple of the kitchen units and stash our valuables, important docs etc in the space and then replace the kickboards.
Still reasonably light here tonight at 5pm - despite the cold weather, Spring is on its way!:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

I suspect Vim had soda of some sort in. I use bicarbonate of soda for scouring the sink but it doesn't quite cut through the grease the way I remember Vim doing. I saw a 'recipe' for scouring powder that was equal parts of bicarb, salt and borax so might try that. I drilled some holes in the top of one of those tall thin black plastic tubs that you get curry powder in and it makes a perfect shaker for the home made scourerIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
