They said on bbc news altogether over 3 million barrels of oil a day pass through Suez, but I think that would be safeguarded, they'd shove the UN in or something. Money talks lol and the oil companies have tons of it !

:) Thanks for all your tips, Ceridwen, appreciate you taking the time. There's only one alcove at the Shoebox, a 4 foot wide one in the bedroom which holds the chest-of-drawers with a high level hanging rail above. I use the-shelves-above-the-doorway trick in my allotment shed but not at home. I have a wall unit thingy from the Sally Army which includes bookshelves. Don't keep many as I read about 180 per annum and most of them are shelved at the public library 5 minutes away. I may live in a rough neighbourhood but I'm very central. ;) The two-bowl washing up trick wouldn't work as the sink is tiny but I have long since gone to a vertical dish drainer rack which makes a bit more room around the draining board. My bath panel is painted hardboard held on with screws and screw-collars, and as I'm a tenant I'm not at liberty to pull the place around too much. If I did get under the tub (and I'm so tempted) it would be a fiddle and something you wouldn't want to do very often. I'm having to operate a strict one in one out policy for things like mugs, glasses etc.

:o Hey, here's a trick for anyone with an apex-roofed shed and a load of bean canes/ pea sticks in the way.
    1. Get 4 large cuphooks and two knackered bicyle inner tubes.
    2. Screw the cuphooks into the roof struts about 6 inches down from the crest of the roof, at 45 degree angle.
    3. Double up the inner tubes (or use ropes) and suspend between the cupbooks.
    4. Eh voila, you have created 2 slings in which you can lay bundles of sticks and have them up and out of the way in what would otherwise be dead space.

Telling you, that simple trick alone has transformed the lottie shed from a hellhole to a usable space.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

    Another little thought

Kickspace drawers belwo the kitchen units.

Since most of the "shirting" is only fixed lightly, undo and then:

    1. Use the space behind for large flat objects like baking trays
    2. Find a box/cut down a box that you can slide in and out
    3. Ikea used to sell kickspace drawer, fixed to the skirting, on rollers.

Mine take the large flat kitchen kit, lamps, spare packs of Jcloths and scouring pads, etc. Another hides a tomato box full of empty jars for bottling (depending on the time of year).

The vanity strip under the cooker flaps up and the space below takes the dustpan and brush, floor cloths etc. It would be big enough to take a wash bowl.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Well if the powers-that-be havent had fallback plans for this particular scenario there in place for some years now - then they seriously have not been doing their job. It was obvious it would only be a matter of time before this came up...(ie I would say the plans should have been put in place as soon as access to the Internet became commonplace - at which point it became clear that Joe/Jane in the street would start finding out all sorts of information their Governments dont want them to have...and......).

Interesting article in the Indy about the potential oil shock. He says that 2% of the world's oil goes through the canal but 8% of the world's traded goods. So if the Canal is closed again then container ships would have to detour round the Cape of Godd Hope. The extra fuel cost for the longer journer would cause price rises.

Add to that the potential food crisis

And it is beginning to look a bit like interesting times are on the way.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

With all the issues happening around the world, I think we're now all starting to realise that the world truly is a global village and that we can be affected sooner than we think by events which are happening thousands of miles away. Sadly there's not too much we can do about many of them and unfortunately our garden is just too small to sink an oilwell in the middle of the lawn. And even if oil was found down there, I'd be reluctant to have my vegetable patch and my peace and quiet destroyed, no matter how much money was involved.

We're just going to have to get more savy and more ingenuous about managing our diets and the way we use our energy - which will be pretty difficult for those of us who are already trying to live frugally. The people I feel particularly sorry for are those in rural areas or who have long commutes to work and who must be spending a fortune in petrol or diesel. I'm sure car sharing pools will soon be coming more popular again. For anybody in this state it's worth checking with your local council whether they're sponsoring something like this, although often it's just not convenient to share with somebody else for all kinds of domestic reasons.
