Had an idea is a turn of phrase my dear, don't take it so literally.

As for "they would have all done it" The Tories are well known for taking from the poor and giving to the rich. It's only going to be worse now, the average struggling household will be having to pull hundreds of pounds out of thin air, meanwhile the loopholes available to the well off to avoid paying their taxes (like our very own George Osborne) costs billions each year. So instead of increasing VAT and giving retailers a nifty excuse to over charge more than they perhaps already do, how about making the like of Mr Osborne pay his dues. After all if one of us mere mortals failed to pay our bills, those owed would soon come demanding it paid.

Just to make myself more objective damn Tories, damn Labour, damn those weak willed Lib Dems and certainly above all others damn the BNP :P

So its the tories fault that companies have been evading billions in taxes ? I just find it amazing that this has just come to the forefront now there is another government in charge - notice how no one really cared when Labour were in.

So what would you idea for clawing back the billions upon billions we are in debt by then? Labour were going to increase NI payments which would also hit the poor every single week of their lives whereas VAT doesnt really need to have that big an impact on them as the majority of food is VAT exempt.

So lets hear your ideas - and if you mention the banks then thats going to get you laughed out of here rather quickly

Jeez some people on these forums are lame. Here's my idea, take the stick out of your rectum, take a chill pill and stop being so darn well touchy and nit-picky about every single little thing.

FYI, people did care when Labour were in Government, why do you think the abomination that is the BNP gained more support and well duh...we now have a coalition with no Labour.

I am not particularly fond of any of the parties , my original "damn Tories" comment was a tongue in cheek, throw away comment, but of course leave it to one of the of the up-tights to rub their hands together with glee at an opportunity to jump down someone's virtual throat....get over yourself!
If anyone should be laughed out, it's those who feel the need to come on a forum of this nature with seemingly nothing better to do than be actively and unnecessarily aggressive every chance they get.

Oh I almost forgot, banks banks banks banks banks.

I'm not evading anything but your snide attitude. I've clearly hit a Conservative nerve eh, don't let it bother you so.

It simply annoys me that the Tories, rather than take from their own (George Osborne owes over 1 million in taxes) They just hiked up VAT, the extra outgoing to the average household, with the economy being as it is, will see working class people having to struggle even further. It was estimated that for an average household weekly expenses would increase by around £7.50, that's £30 a month. Which may not seem much, but with many people losing their jobs, and barely being able to make ends meet...that £30 could cripple their budget. Meanwhile those who are already much better off financially (and no not the banks le sigh) will be laughing.

Forgive me for not agreeing with take from the poor to give to the rich tactics.

    dmg24 is correct, unfortunately.

I recently took it up when I was getting a coffee for a train. I noticed that instead of the expected 2.5% rise, they had raised the cost 20%. When I queried it, I was just told "It's just VAT going up". When I pointed out what a sole VAT increase in the price should have made the new price, I was asked to leave. Hadn't raised my voice, just suggested they didn't try to hide it.
I thnk the train may have preferred some diesel, rather than coffee. :D

VAT has gone up on every non-exempt item. The costs incurred in stocking an individual product might well have increased in addition to the actual increase of the product itself, i.e. because travel costs, manufacturing costs, distribution costs etc. have also increased. Just a thought. I know the landlord at my local always used this excuse every time he whacked another 10p on the price of a pint.

That is wrong - Google invitation to treat.
"Invitation to treat" is a bit of a misnomer. Although retailers do have some rights to charge what they like for their products, there are some regulations about what they can advertise as the price.

The contract is made at the point of sale, therefore whatever the price is you have the option of saying 'no' and walking away. However to be honest I suspect Wickes are doing the same as many others are doing, taking the VAT rise to hike those prices a bit further, I bet that tin of paint ends up at £18.99!

I noticed B&Q were altering prices over christmas to meet the new VAT price.
It depends at which point the price is challenged. If the offer is accepted, based on the advertised or quoted price and then satisfied by payment, there could be perceived to have been a breach of contract if the wrong price is charged.

I had a feeling greedy retailers would use the new rate of VAT as an excuse to hike prices, stupid really as in this sort of market, people will go where things are cheaper. Who in their right mind (for example) would pay £10 for something they can get a few quid cheaper in a different store. I think with the economy as it is, businesses that deliberately over charge will be at risk of having to close down, that will mean even more unemployed people, and thus the cycle continues.

    Damn Tories. :P
But how far would you look to save twenty pence?

But he does, doesn't he? He must do, because he told me, "we are all in this together." He wouldn't have lied to me, would he?
