Which virus checker do you use? If it's Avast: open the main user interface, click Real Time Shields, then Web Shield, then click the Stop button. Does that make browsing any quicker?
I was using Avira. I have removed this and loaded Avast. I tried removing web shield and it is no quicker.
I guess that would be a trade off between convenience and security?

I have installed the new Ad blocker for internet explorer 8 and that has solved my problem. http://simple-adblock.com/
