Specsavers - Doin my head in

I've had a letter from specsavers (well actually it's about the 9 zillionth letter spreading over the last 18 months) telling me that "due to a change in the regulations regarding the supply of contact lenses we will be unable to supply you with your contact lens pack."
I've had loads of these and they always still send me my CLs, I'm guessing what they're really after is to make me come in for an (paid) eye test that I don't want.
This letter has "cancellation of scheme" all over it in big letter though.
As far as I can see (haha) the regulations changed in 2005, and you can buy contacts online, so what are they on about?
Are specsavers idiots?
All this has done is make me look at what I'm paying them, realise that I can get the lenses for less than half the price online, and make me desire not to use them ever again.
Has anyone else been receiving these letters or is it just me (probably because I missed my last eye test 12 months ago)?
Also, has anyone used any online supplier please, and what brands are compatible with (or rebranded to) easyvision opsys lenses?
Thanks!

Lol - very funny!0 -
When they stopped the free eye-tests they sent me a voucher for an eye-test in April 2011, when i would next need a check.
They then harassed me in April 2010 about having a check-up... so which year is right?
I ignored them and still have my voucher, bet they didn't think anyone would bother to keep it this long0 -
I went into specsavers today but found that the free varifocal lense offer had ended (even though it's still on their website). I asked for a quote for a new pair of specs and the girl automatically priced them with the £79 v/f lenses. I asked her why she had done this and not priced them with the £49 lenses which were the ones I would have got for free and she said the cheaper ones were a waste of money as the field of view was so narrow as to be virtually useless. So why did they use them as an free offer I asked....no answer, lol.0

are they just trying to get you in for an eyetest, or are they trying to get you in for a change in the scheme? I can't suss out what the problem is.
If it is just an eyetest, then you can go elsewhere for it to be done and buy from whoeer you like.
If it for a change of scheme, if you ignore them, they will just stop sending you lenses out all of a sudden, i suppose.
Whatever they want all I would suggest to you is that if you are due for an eyetest, get it done somewhere. Yourpower can change quite markedly in a few months. and take it from someone who knows, don't mistreat your eyesight, you will be sorry
With regards to online buying, a lot of the suppliers are overseas, so REALLY look around and do your research before you jump in. Have a look on here and other forums and guage who are good and who are not. I have seen quite a few complaints over the years about online lenses , I bought a pair of prescription specs online costing £195 instead of £500+ from opticians. Cant wear them as cannot see out of em properley ! wouldnt do anything about it either as was a complex script and said exempt from DSR regs.
Sometimes a bargain is not really a bargain, as they say !0 -
I had the same problem early 2010. I was due an eye test and I kept ignoring the letter - busy with work, didn't have any blurriness, sight problems with the contacts etc. They then stopped my contact lens delivery...I can't say they didn't warn me - they sent me 3 letters over the space of 6 months...
Anyways, made an appointment and they told me that due to the new checks that Specsavers have introduced they need to check my sight and eyes every 2 years. They now check for glucoma and problems like that.... I wasn't so sure and thought it was a ploy to get my £20 out of me (but then again work pay for my sight tests...). The next week a girl was in the paper, the tests at Specsavers had indicated early signs of a potential infection which could have resulted in loss of sight......

You might want to check what the letter was asking you because I have a contract with Specsavers for lenses and there is a requirement that every 6 months you go in for a check - worth noting this is free and is not a eye test.
That said the lenses are expensive each month and I am looking at options and found out the the Specsavers Easyvision Opsys lenses are re-branded Ciba Vision so search for these and you will find them on most contact lens sites. I use torics and these are re-branded Frequency Xcel ones.0 -
Agreed, my understanding is that one of the tests (eye test) is part of the contract. I go every year and have the CL test done at the same time. I don't particularly enjoy paying for the test but it's part of my MOT, same thing as the dentist and odd visits to the doctor, etc., you don't want to take chances with your healthKeep calm and carry on0

I have monthly contact lenses with Spec Savers and have to have eye tests - which are included in the price - so check, it may be 'free'. Including sight tests.0

It is actually a legal requirement that you have a contact lens check once a year and if you don't ,opticians cannot legally supply you with the lenses. Also in order supply lenses you must also have an up to date eye exam- according to what your opticians records as your recall, every 1 or 2 years. We would see someone more often for a contact lens check if they were having problems ie, infection, corneal ulcers, problems usually associated with overwear or poor cleaning.
People- it's your:think::think: eye health and vision- it usually takes 20 min. and is free if you are on a home delivery scheme. How much would you pay to get your sight back?0
