I'm pretty sure there will be procedures in place for this, what do amazon do with the returned laptop, prob send it back to sony as amazon cant sell it used, sony will note the serial number, and match it to your form you originally submitted, giving them all the details they need to claim the money back from you

  • There's nothing in the terms and conditions that says Sony will seek to reclaim the VAT if you return the item. All it says is that a claim cannot be made on a returned item. I didn't make the claim on a returned item - I made a claim on an item I owned. It only became a returned item after the successful VAT claim, and there is nothing in the terms and conditions that expressly deals with that.
  • To me it appears to be a dishonest way of getting money, others may have a different opinion.

You're probably best off calling Sony and explaining that you've returned the laptop and asking them what the situation with the reclaim is now.

Why doesn`t the OP get on with it and do it instead of coming on here with fantasy theories.

Sony are not bothered about giving him his vat back because they put their prices up prior to the offer to cover the cost of giving the vat back.

Previous to the the vat back offer I bought a new tv from JLP.
On the day the offer started the price went up and not just at JLP, also M&S and even Amazon.
I was following all this on

    http://www.hotukdeals.com/audiovisual/all/hot

where there were plenty of comments about what a con the offer was.

So send it back and get your refund because Sony doesn`t care a toss, because they have already charged you the extra in the first place.
They were in effect giving you your own money back.

I am sure there are punters who claimed the VAT refund, then decided for genuine reasons that they wanted to return the item. I would suggest the very worst that could happen is Sony ask you to return the money they paid you.

It is not fraud if you changed your mind and unless one is stupid enough to incriminate themselves I don't see how they could prove you purchased with the intention of returning the item.
Sony doesn`t care a toss, because they have already charged you the extra in the first place.
I don't believe this is true. I bought a sony laptop with £25 off from Costco and VAT refund from Sony. I saw the same item advertised before and after the promotion elsewhere at a higher price.

Believe what you like but I paid £599 at JLP in Oct 2010 and now the price is a whopping £749.

You really are naive if you think the vat back was genuine and straight forward.
There`s no way a TV should increase by £150 in a couple of months even with a vat rise of 2.5%, which on my price would make it £615 at most.

This part of your argument doesn’t really make sense, it doesn’t matter how much Sony put their prices up, even if they raised the price of a laptop from £500 to £1000, the OP will get £1000 plus the VAT that Sony paid him/her, giving the OP effectively a refund of £1148.94 with an initial outlay of only £1000.

Or am i being completely stupid and not getting the argument?

cheers, but Im still lost, i dont see how thoses comments answer the point i made, if the OP is getting a full refund from amazon regardless of how much the product was over inflated and an additional 14.89% from Sony, how is it just his own money back?
